Dec 20th, 2008, in News, by PatungA teenage Australian girl from sunny Queensland finds Islam in Lampung and becomes a revert.
Kim, or Kimi, otherwise known as “KimDonesia” (Kim + Indonesia), a 17 year old Australian from Queensland, the Sunshine state, once lived in Lampung, southern Sumatra, for six months, accompanying her step-father who worked for a sugar company, Gula Putih Mataram (GPM).
While in Lampung she says she studied Islam, and was moved by the passionate devotion of the people there to the religion, and finally fell in love with it, particularly the sound of the call to prayer.
After moving back to Australia she converted to the faith, or reverted as she would have it. Here she explains, in rather good Indonesian, how she came to live in Indonesia in 2007:
In this video she explains her religious journey – from Wiccan moon worshipping, to nothing in particular, to Islam – she even has the pronunciation right, Islaaam, – and how living in Lampung and talking to the people there was one of the keys to her decision to throw her lot in with Allah.

You got me all wrong, I don’t give a crap what goes on Indonesia or any other country I don’t reside in. I take offense to Indonesians blaming their problems on guys like me. If the Dutch/Europeans didn’t go to Indonesia you mostly likely would be working the rice paddies or rubber plantations for some Arab fat cat or local Sultan earning a kilo of rice a day. Show some respect for the sake of our friendship. You worship the Arab, but they didn’t give you the technology and medicine to become one of the worlds largest welfare states!

I don’t think the Dutch invented Apartheid in South Africa.
They had similar arrangements here – as the original city plans for Bandoeng showed. Even Batavia/Djakarta had oriental/European/pribumi districts.
But Apartheid you can blame all on the South Efricans.

Although that sounds fine, apartheid is a Dutch word. A South African friend explained that there still are the blacks, the Brits and the Afrikaner. Those lasts are descendent of Dutch farmers who settled there. Afrikaans is also an official dialect of the Dutch language.
You’re right if you say the Dutch government didn’t have anything to do with it, but the same goes for Indonesia before the bankruptcy of the VOC (which was a Dutch company).
If I remember correctly, the European/Inlander/Asian distinction has left colour coded birth certificates and separate civil administration until recently.
Although the inlanders were treated as second class citizens, at least the were thought of, wereas the blacks in Africa were just ‘don’t cares’.Anyway we’re digressing from the subject

South Efrica just had worse numbers (for the Whities) than the rest.
And yes, it’s not a comfortable memory for the Dutch these days. But such discomfort saves us from forgetfulness, which is probably the nastiest force of all.

If you would like a definition of the West, how about this one:The West consists of the countries of the North-Western part of the European continent and the satellite states of Australia, New Zealand and the Northern part of the Americas.
The satellite states of satellite states (Japan, Philippines) are not included.Unlike some wrong maps in Australia, the West HQ is usually located in the centre of the world and the satellite states on the edges.
