Islam Revert

Dec 20th, 2008, in News, by

A teenage Australian girl from sunny Queensland finds Islam in Lampung and becomes a revert.

Kim, or Kimi, otherwise known as “KimDonesia” (Kim + Indonesia), a 17 year old Australian from Queensland, the Sunshine state, once lived in Lampung, southern Sumatra, for six months, accompanying her step-father who worked for a sugar company, Gula Putih Mataram (GPM).

While in Lampung she says she studied Islam, and was moved by the passionate devotion of the people there to the religion, and finally fell in love with it, particularly the sound of the call to prayer.

After moving back to Australia she converted to the faith, or reverted as she would have it. Here she explains, in rather good Indonesian, how she came to live in Indonesia in 2007:

In this video she explains her religious journey – from Wiccan moon worshipping, to nothing in particular, to Islam – she even has the pronunciation right, Islaaam, – and how living in Lampung and talking to the people there was one of the keys to her decision to throw her lot in with Allah.

Youtube Mission

Kimdonesia has in the short time since her conversion this year produced dozens of Islamic dakwah (missionary) videos on Youtube, and has a bit of a following among some Indonesians, at http://www.youtube.com/user/KimDonesia.

  1. Oh, yes, and intellectually, what do you think of people who believe in the Islamic religion ? I don’t mean their right to believe as long as they leave you alone. Do you think they’re misguided ?

  2. ET says:

Why is muhammadelijah wasting his time here?

I’m beginning to suspect this guy isn’t for real. Nobody can be that brainwashed, unless I still underestimate islamic methods.
Maybe he is Purba Negoro in disguise, taking on a new personality to provoke and lead us by the nose.

  3. Also,

Any Islamic Friend or Moslem out there, can u help educate me please.

What happens to Kafir or aetheist on Judgement Day ? I am Muslim KTP – mostly do Kejawen -but like Bpk Haji Mohammad Soeharto want to improve and learn the true way.

  4. Oigal says:

Ah at long last, a semi interesting one..

    Do you believe in God

How is that any business of anyone but myself? How does that stop anyone believing what they want to believe?

What do you think of religion

Not much but in its most passive form it offers comfort to many who need that crutch, its most brutal and ugly is causes untold misery and harm.

    You are an aetheist

Again…if so my business and so what ..if not..my business and so what..

    You are critical of religion.

Shouldn’t we be critical or at least be prepared to question of any force, organisation or person that tries to impose its views on others. Otherwise we end up in world of beheadings, snake handlers and dictators.

Back to your first one, if there is a God she is definately an under achiever..and emplyes a really lousy communication system šŸ™‚

Why would you single out the Muslim faith? Thats very “racist” or is it religist of you.

their right to believe as long as they leave you alone

Seems a nice creed to live by don’t you think?

As the name implies, that will be the day when only God who can judge, not us, bro Achmad…. IMHO, we’d better focus on our life today than worrying about what’s gonna happen to us or to other people in future life.

Just by doing good deeds, we’re already blessed by a pleasant and comfortable feeling that can lead us to a happy life. And if in the future heaven DOES exist for us, I’ll consider it as a bonus.. šŸ˜€

  7. ET says:

By seeing overall picture, let be honest, what is major driving factor of all the world misery and problem. Is it because muslim banging their head on the floor or because the greediness and shameless of the few elite western people.
We are looking forward your opinion.

Always the West is at fault according to Cukurungan. ‘We’ suspect he suffers from an extreme degree of racial jealousy or spite (kedengkian), a not uncommon Indonesian trait.
The major driving factor of the world’s misery and problems, Cukurungan, is ignorance and exploitation by people’s own ‘elites’ and leaderships, serving autocratic regimes that require ‘submission’ (does this ring a bell?) to a totalitarian ideology. Take a look at what happened e.g. in China during the cultural revolution and see how they are recovering by taking on other more realistic values borrowed from the West while still holding on to their specific framework and cultural heritage. Does this mean they won’t face problems anymore? Sure they will but at least they don’t solve them by sticking their heads in the sand. Or bang their heads on the floor.

  8. Nay says:

What happens to Kafir or aetheist on Judgement Day ?

I am not Muslim, Athiest, nor Agnostic, but I’ll answer the question.
(I do not know what I would call myself… other than I see all manifestations of various religions as being “God’s” will. I guess He likes diversity)

In my understanding of interfaith studies… “Judgment Day” or “the end of the world” is NOT about the world exploding and everyone dying (ala a disaster movie).
But rather, it is about YOUR OWN DEATH. When each of us die, the “world ends”, and we do not know the day nor the hour (unless you intend to kill yourself of course)

From that interpretation, “heaven” is in fact HOW YOU ARE REMEMBERED after the fact.
Were you a good person? Did you make people happy? Did you strive to become the best person you could be? … or were you ultimately forgettable? … or were you a downright nasty person that caused suffering for people?

In my understanding, “heaven” is a place you will be if you are fondly remembered after your death, and the work you do here on earth lives on. Meanwhile, “hell” is where you will be sent when people remember you in less favourable terms.

“God” judges where you will go, because “God” is all creation… which includes all living people, so they all somewhat democratically get a say in it.

Whether you are Muslim, Buddhist, Athiest, Christian makes no difference to “God”, because he is above all religious practice and cares not for our human definitions religion, or how he is worshipped. He only cares about the nature of what we do and what we become, in my opinion.

Juxtapositioned upon Islam, then…. a kafir is one who denies “life” or “Allah” or “God” or whatever human word we can come up with… meaning that, in my mind, there are very few true “kafir”. Even if one doesn’t accept Islam as their “religion”, it does not mean that one does not accept “Allah” or “God”. (I’m sure some Muslims could use that argument to their benefit)

People who turn their back on life usually kill themselves anyway, or are a physical danger to society, and worse, THEMSELVES.

  9. ET says:

    @ Nay

You hit the nail right on the head with your post from 11.33 am

  10. Oigal,

As for believing in religion – sure, Christianity, Bahaism, whatever. But this threat has focused on Islam.

So… intellectually what do you think of people who believe in Islam ? (Islam can be a proxy for religious faith in general, but i’d be interested in your thoughts not the specifics of Islam).

  11. ET says:

    @devilkitty

Islam knows that men are ā€œWeakā€ species, (oh yes you are..) Islam knows for the sake of ourselves and our brothers that we should not lure the men into their weakness, while at the same time.. men and women have biological need which naturally in different proportion between men and women.

You seem to have a high opinion of yourself as a species by calling men ‘weak’ šŸ™‚ .
But has it never occurred to you that by denying the sight of what is normal and natural you make your men even weaker? That you turn your men into sexually obsessed maniacs who get aroused by the mere sight of an inch of hair or flesh? Didn’t you know that deprivation of normal instincts or feelings causes anxiety and obsession? Didn’t you know that muslims and particularly Indonesian men count among the highest consumers of pornography because they have no other outlet for their repressed sexuality than the sight of some jilbabed beauty? Read some more threads here in IM about beauty pageants and look how your brothers react like little children in a candy shop just by having the chance to look at the natural beauty of women.

What you believe to be the cure is in fact making them even ‘weaker’ than they already were.

  12. David says:

From that interpretation, ā€œheavenā€ is in fact HOW YOU ARE REMEMBERED after the fact.
Were you a good person? Did you make people happy? Did you strive to become the best person you could be? … or were you ultimately forgettable? … or were you a downright nasty person that caused suffering for people?

Trouble is, unless you’re famous, within a few generations after you’re dead no-one will even remember that you existed, and in some sense then you didn’t exist, because you’re existence then is not a reality for anyone now, so whether you were a good person or bad makes no real difference…. unless we’re talking in sort of other-wordly terms in which case I’d better butt out.

  13. Nay says:

Men have to understand that women are not bad people for wanting to enjoy themselves with many men. Women are just like men, except they’ve been operating under a BROKEN system. It’s a system that tells women that “if you do what you want, or what you feel like doing, with men or otherwise, you are bad.”… and of course, women can’t live like that. So they lie to themselves… they say things like “It didn’t count” or “I’ve never slept with a man” or “I only can fall in love with one man” … just so they can keep their number low, in order to keep the demand for them high amongst those men who want to believe that they are marrying “virgins”, but who would have “no respect” for a liberated women who does what she wants.

Men are not “weak” if they have many women in their lives (some of who they may even sleep with, it’s the woman’s choice). To such a man, a woman’s attempt to manipulate him by limiting access, denying sex meets with SOLID rejection. There is no need for a man who is satisfied with many women, to care about one who would attempt to manipulate him by denying him sex in exchange for something (commitment, money, marriage), and he has no attraction for one who would deliberately make herself unattractive by covering herself over.

Now, I understand the counterargument as well. I think some jibabed women need to wear one simply because they feel that they need to control their own urges (why?), or because they want men to treat them as human beings and not as sex objects. Perhaps that’s fair enough too. On the other hand, what kind of society drives men to treat women as sex objects? That’s not an easy question to answer.

  14. Nay says:

I tend to believe that “God” works a bit like an eternal pinball machine or a drop into a pond. The effect that someone has tends to ripple through generations, like a grand Rube Goldberg machine.

  15. devilkitty says:

@ET : nonono, my “brothers” (good muslim men, not islam ktp and such) as far as ive known in real life are not sex maniac like you said (i cant even imagine it.. hihihih xD) Sometimes you cant just read statistic instead of hanging around with them personally. Honestly, i do feel safer being the only woman among good muslim men compare to be around …..some cute guys in a bar maybe ? . If my brothers watch porns, it’s their sin (whatever in their mind i dont wanna know), and if i caught one of my friend watching it id probably scream to surprise them, lol. Yes i do feel safer to hang around with people that i dont have to worry (or less worry) about them expecting more and dare to ask more than THAT from me.

@Nay : the system’s constructed as is because we both’re unique creatures from the start. Men see cleavage at malls or boobs bouncing, that would drive them crazy, but us Women see penis hanging we just laugh a little dont we.. and every morning they have “you know what” out of their control dont they ? and that “curse” will be going for a long long time, thats why i say men are “weak”..

  16. Halo Ibu DevilKittys Yth.,

I have the special Pencak Silat breath exercise to control the “curse” and turn it into a blessing, just as the Mahmut tames the wild elephant Va Va Voom ! I learned it after a visit to the late great Mak Erot. Va Va Voom lagi !! We need to maintain the Seksi to truly master the Bule.

  17. devilkitty says:

“tame the elephant” xD lol, im glad to hear that (maybe someday i would like to learn from you too, for health reason).

  18. madrotter says:

wonder if mak erot’s son is getting as many customers since he took over the business…

I was more or less retired but I couldn’t let this picture pass by. The perfect world according to muhammadelijah. I’m sure he agrees with how the Islamic courts of Somalia deal with adulterers. A reminder for all of us if we let muhammadelijah and their lot have it their ways.

Warning! I put a link in stead of an embedded image because it may be too graphic for some of us.

  21. Lairedion says:

Apparently linking doesn’t work. Well then…

  22. devilkitty says:

Im disgusted how some Arab countries mixed up tradition with syaria. Rajam or Stoning Law is not Islamic, in Quran Rajam’s mentioned as Kuffar and Pagan’s tradition, not islamic. In Indonesia’s better, we mixed up Javanese tradition with Islam, the result is Tahlilan & Selametan alias party2 :p

  23. Ok All Believers Present,

    Here’s Oigal’s kicker on religion:

if there is a God she is definately an under achiever..and emplyes a really lousy communication system

    1. He’s publicly insulted the Almighty.

    2. He’s a guy who constantly makes harsh moral judgements and comments on Indonesia and its people. Yet his belief system is radically different to theirs.

I wonder what most Indonesians would think about being judged so by an aetheist ?

  24. Nay says:

    He’s publicly insulted the Almighty.

Let’s interpret that in the intended context. He’s really ticked off with the idea of a “theist” God. That is, the concept of God as a person who sits on a cloud in the sky and dictates things, and who is capable of listening to people’s problems and prayers, and can act on them… and he lives in a magical supernatural place called “heaven” which is a lot of fun, and we go there when we die.

Now…. THAT concept of “God” is completely flawed in my opinion, but it seems that the general “Western public” gets this weird idea about God and Christianity in particular… which results in a lot of people outright rejecting the idea of a theist God and turning their backs on religion, Christianity, and spiritual development in the West.

The thing is, that the theist concept IS ridiculous… but this is what happens when someone misinterprets symbolism in holy texts… (and the fact that you can even do that makes people want to ignore the texts completely). It’s this that we find Athiests rebelling against. As in George Carlin’s classic routine on religion:- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MeSSwKffj9o

  25. ET says:

    @ devilkitty

@ET : nonono, my ā€œbrothersā€ (good muslim men, not islam ktp and such) as far as ive known in real life are not sex maniac like you said

When I said ‘brothers’ I didn’t mean your saudara kandung but your ‘brothers in faith’ as you generally call each other.

    @ devilkitty

but us Women see penis hanging we just laugh a little dont we..

Sure, as long as it’s hanging… Or maybe because it’s hanging. lol

    @ Lairedion

No need to embed the picture in a link. You’ve done well to throw it in their face (pardon the pun).

  26. devilkitty says:

@ET : Of course, thats exactly what i meant about brothers as “brother in faith” who are practising. But personally i cant call those “brother in faith” who arent practising as “brothers”. šŸ˜‰

  27. This idea’s very popular in Indonesia:

That is, the concept of God as a person who sits on a cloud in the sky and dictates things, and who is capable of listening to people’s problems and prayers, and can act on them… and he lives in a magical supernatural place called ā€œheavenā€ which is a lot of fun, and we go there when we die.

I guess the point is how would such Indonesians feel about a Bule criticising their public standards from an aetheist moral perspective.

  28. Nay says:

I guess the point is how would such Indonesians feel about a Bule criticising their public standards from an aetheist moral perspective.

It wouldn’t go down very well.
That said, there is no “athiest moral perspective”, because there is no organized atheism!

They are not a group or organization of people, and all their ideas differ. By definition they reject the theist idea of “God”. They ado not like the idea of a god that simply takes the highest position in a human-led heirarchy (which is where tribalism breeds), BUT you may find that some of them have a HIGH RESPECT for the natural world, science, biology, life, and the universe (such as Richard Dawkins for example). They recognize that there is life that is all-unifying and omnipotent….. but they won’t go as far as giving it all a name, or calling it “Allah”!

They’ll keep their definitions about “Allah” strictly to the scientific domain. (Unfortunately, that doesn’t leave athiests in a position to tell us how to live, or even allow them to organize themselves in such a way to influence society…. but that doesn’t mean that some of them aren’t weighing up the evidence!)

  29. muhammadelijah says:

… but can you show me the proof (not from Islamic world about Jews betrayed Tauraat … ??

Book of Leviticus is the third of five books of Penateuch.

Is this law implemented in Israel?

    Leviticus 20:10
Both the adulterer and the adulteress must be put to death.
    http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Leviticus+20:10&version=NIV

  30. I

t wouldn’t go down very well.

Could you elaborate on this, Pak Nay ??

    Thank.

    Drs. A. Sudarsono.
