Jemma Purdey, in Anti-Chinese Violence in Indonesia, 1996-1999, suggests that the anti-Chinese violence which periodically occurred prior to May 1998 had its origins in the policy of the Suharto government of marginalising the ethnic Chinese population, restricting them to certain, mainly business, roles, and portraying them as uncaring and corrupt.
Frustrated and poor “native” Indonesians who might be expected to take out their anger on government officials instead were diverted by the government into venting those frustrations on the Chinese. So, for the Suharto regime, the Chinese were a convenient scapegoat, and a provided an important safety valve for the expression of the people’s passions, and allowed mob violence to be directed at targets other than the regime. Normally violence against Chinese was directed largely against their property, rather than their persons. (see Pogroms in East Java 1965-66 for a couple of examples.)

The riots which occurred in Jakarta in May of 1998 however were of a different nature, says Purdey. They seemed to have been organised, with military-like precision, rather than spontaneous displays of rebellion, and involved the use of rape against Chinese women, although the numbers of victims is disputed.
Purdey points out however that it is only a minority of the indigenous population which is given to participating in mob violence against ethnic Chinese. eurekastreet

Thanks for the comment, but I just don’t buy that one religion can teach hatred. Not one that has more than 1 billion followers anyway. I do believe that there are some people who disguise their hatred and preach their hatred in the name of some religion. And I believe that these happen in any religion, not exclusively in Islam.

Religion are for the people of egypt under Pharoah where the masses were enslaved to serve the chief priest.
We have to understand that when Muhamad delivered the messages in the koran, he was confronting Arabs who were pagans. I cannot see any difference between the ancient Arab stone worship religion and present day Muslim religionist.
I cannot recall any message in the koran inviting the masses to participate in any religion. The emphasis of the message in the koran was for the believers to do good deeds and be righteous.
The koran warns mankind against clerics/priesthood and idol worship. The present day Muslim religionist promotes clerics/priest and bow and prostrate towards (and sometimes kiss) a meteoric stone.

Why should I listen to what muhamed said? He is merely a messenger. He is no God. God’s messages, as I recall, are all written in the koran. Even Mohamed dare not delete or add anything into the verses, for God will certainly punish him had he done so.

I agree with you. We should learn about technology from West and Japan (Asian), hard work ethos from Chinese, democracy and human rights from West. But from the Arabs? I doubt we can learn something useful from them, uhmm… dunno, terrorism? Islamist extremism? I think the Arabs should not be on the list you mentioned about the production of technology. -

However, KSJ goofed, and when pointed out, she was on the defensive and released a tirade of abuses. Admitting her own mistake is a bitter pill to swallow for this chick.
Her written English backfired on her claim that she was brought up in Europe, and doing well in a governmental department. Chances are that she is a janitor somewhere in a Jakarta office building.

It comes from a combination of jealousy and what you have been taught at home. Anti-Chinese sentiment is directed at their ruthless work ethic and close family connections.
I think we as Chinese Indonesian do not do our part also… why not admit our own mistakes when we do not try to assimilate and being exclusive, building a high wall that separate us from the local Indonesians?… I know that in some part of Indonesia (esp in Medan) the Chinese people are still keeping their prejudice against the pribumi right? they even still speak chinese in formal setting like school, are we not suppose to use our Bahasa Indonesia in formal setting?
I am thankful for most peranakan Chinese in Java and Manado, they can assimilate well with the pribumi, some do intermarry and speak the local dialect as mother tounge… If all the Chinese realize that we live in Indonesia and must exert our effort to assimilate well with the pribumi.. I think Indonesia will be much better

I am very grateful that not all Pribumi express hatred towards us and some are learning to open their mind… I admit that I am more comfortable associating with my pribumi friends than my Chinese friends… although some prejudice still exist… but where in the world that there is no prejudice?? Even pribumis still have prejudice against each other (like Batak vs Manado)…
Our concern for you pribumi…. Dont make Indonesia as a Muslim Country by enforcing your Syariah Law… if that really happend, I think a lot of Christian Pribumi will also set their feet out of the country… Look at Malaysia, because of the syariah, they are still having problem with racial discrimination…

please do not put me in similar category as CUK, for I do not belong to any religion, but a believer in God. From where I stand, i can see the folly of those who submit themselves to clergies and priests, and people who worship stones, statues and man, in mosques, temples and churches.
a) I do not hate chinese, but I adore them. One of my favourite programmes is CCTV9 centrestage. The Chinese indeed is a gifted but superstitious race.
I do not hate any businessmen, but I do hate them when they put profit before everything else.
Indonesian chinese businessmen who made their wealth in Indonesia who then take that wealth overseas have a responsibility towards that community where that wealth was obtained from. Some of the resentment by natives towards the chinese maybe due to the fact that they earn their wealth locally but spend all that money overseas. No trickling down effect. No caring and sharing. Its all rape and pillage moneywise.
b) natives in Indonesia suffers from amok because they are susceptible to rumours and are very emotional. Only irrational and less educated people does this. That is why it is very easy for clerics/leaders to influence the less knowledgeable to riot and create mayhem, amok happens when emotions override common sense and pris are a very emotional race. A true person is one that can control his emotion in any situation.
unlike Indonesia, china suffers from some of the worse violence throughout history.We are talking about chinese killing their own kind. In the last century alone there were several wars there, starting with the emperor being overthrown, civil wars, japanese invasion, communist conquest and elimination of any considered subversive. million were killed by mao ze dong. It was only after his death that the present new and peaceful china emerges.
Thailand, before the europeans arrive, were themselves invaders. They were at war with all their neighbours including the burmese (myanmar), Khmers and malays. They were no angels. they are peaceful now only because they were at one time surrounded by the british in the west and south, the french in the east and north.
The riots in 1998 pales in comparison to the ones in china. I have no answer on how to prevent another similar riot. there will always be an unscrupulous leader somewhere who will use the less knowledgeable within our community to gain political advantage by creating mayhem.
FYI in 1969, when the alliance party in Malaysia was badly mauled by the opposition, Tun razak (deputy PM) and his partners, orchestrated racial riots in order to overthrow tunku abdul rahman, who was PM and considered too soft to minorities. (I consider Tunku as the father of singapore and not LKY as he was the one who granted independence for singapore by booting them out of the federation while others wanted to put LKy behind bars.)
c) Fatah and hamas are two groups vying for power. One is under the influence of clerics and PM and the other their president. When Arafat was in charge, he made sure that peace was impossible so that he could milk the oil rich states of aid which goes into his pockets. The lives of palestinian was irrelevant for a despicable man like him.
Those in Iraq and afghanistan are unsure if the country is colonised or ruled by their leaders. On one hand, the foreigners claim that they are liberators, on the other, the foreigners do not care less if an local was caught in the crossfire. sometimes whole villages in afghanistan was caught in carpet bombing by NATO forces. this lack of care for human lives is fuelling a resurgent taliban in afghanistan.
In iraq, I personally believe the US destroyed the country on purpose. this was to give an indication to all Arabs their fate if they dare attempt another 9/11. The only reason why their soldiers are still there is to prevent the iranians from taking over Iraq.
