Jemma Purdey, in Anti-Chinese Violence in Indonesia, 1996-1999, suggests that the anti-Chinese violence which periodically occurred prior to May 1998 had its origins in the policy of the Suharto government of marginalising the ethnic Chinese population, restricting them to certain, mainly business, roles, and portraying them as uncaring and corrupt.
Frustrated and poor “native” Indonesians who might be expected to take out their anger on government officials instead were diverted by the government into venting those frustrations on the Chinese. So, for the Suharto regime, the Chinese were a convenient scapegoat, and a provided an important safety valve for the expression of the people’s passions, and allowed mob violence to be directed at targets other than the regime. Normally violence against Chinese was directed largely against their property, rather than their persons. (see Pogroms in East Java 1965-66 for a couple of examples.)

The riots which occurred in Jakarta in May of 1998 however were of a different nature, says Purdey. They seemed to have been organised, with military-like precision, rather than spontaneous displays of rebellion, and involved the use of rape against Chinese women, although the numbers of victims is disputed.
Purdey points out however that it is only a minority of the indigenous population which is given to participating in mob violence against ethnic Chinese. eurekastreet

The reality told that Malay race pribumi majority hate against chinese, this is the fact and it is true. The hatred was supported by the culture & religion difference between them, plus the Islam practices are in opposite side with the chinese’s way of live. That is the fact. The chinese migrant in Thailand can blend very well with the Thai budhist pribumi, some of my friends voluntarily mixed married without any problems.
If Indonesian chinese being discriminated and you can not take it, Thailand is a nice alternative country.
I personally come into the conclusion, chinese culture & malay pribumi Muslim are similar to water and oil, it doesn’t mix forever. -

In Indonesia when a political or religious party gets stronger with followers or having their voice heard, their motive was certain like seats in Parliament. Then any dick, tom or harry who have been supportive will definitely get a place in DPR/MPR. Imagine when you get into the building you have a state provided Volvo and Rp:25.000.000 each months and all other perks. All they do is to approve or disapprove. In each political move there is always a premeditated counter political move. How many of them were able to see through their transparency?
Why Guruh Soekarno Putra never gets into politic. He is a far better person in comparison to Megawati or her sister. What happened to Megawati’s husband? The moment Megawati gets into office he started his own business making moves abusing the Presidential power his wife had. Was he a millionaire, like right now, before she became President?
There are always ways and means of getting things done. Having everyone to have personal assets reported before or after the particular person got elected to office.
There is the Central Bank. The Central Bank in each country is empowered under the Executive Order from the President to place court injunction or to subpoena each an every one of them to surrender their reports on personal assets for cross and counter checking wherever his or hers money is being placed. There is no outer space banking! Whether there are extradition treaty or not it still could be implemented. What happens here is that when someone who is about to set his foot into it, a third party will try ways and means to circumvent their action by making a counter move to prevent or threaten the person. So how could they improve! How could they get right to the point!
If Suharto was smart enough and knows how to clean up his acts instead of being over zealous in wanting to be in office for his final term, then he would have been an execptional President and slowly make his transition in having his power to who ever he chose to be the next president.
At least LKY knows how to clean up his act, at least if any exist. There were many in PAP who had tertiary education but not too many came close to people like Chan Chee Seng, Dr. Goh Chok Tong, Lee Hsien Loong, Lee Hsien Yang, Dr. Hu Tsu Tao etc. How many Indonesian Ministers really have the kind of education, I mean really through academic achievements (not those you know what I mean)?
They said behind the success of a man is always a woman. During the summit of Suharto’s political career he had Ibu Tien. LKY is a typical example. LKY’s wife had a brain twice his size do you know that? Only Tengku Abdul Rahman and Queen Elizabeth II could envy (they were all classmate at Cambridge). Do you know what is to a double A in law?
LKY was many times over being challenged in public but how many succeeded in subduing him? He was a world acclaimed orator, no scripts. Goh Chok Tong was challenge by those highly educated critics in US when he was invited to accept an honorary professor at Collins. They promised him a mountain of questions by critics but when he arrived every one kept quiet. Why? Evaluations…. Thereafter no one whomsoever made any challenge to LKY. GCT etc. Why? It is the results and achievements for Singapore.
I would say as an observer and asked, how many countries in the world gives money to each and every one of their citizens?
I mean directly telling them all they need to do is to show their ID and the money is in their bank account. Singapore had on numerous occasion cool their economy and to loosen their weight in Singapore’s currency to make way in helping her neighboring countries. I mean you won’t be able to see it until that happened! Unless a person who were acquainted in socio politic and socio economy on the macro scale, one will find it hard to piece the puzzles together by hearsay.
This is what Indonesia and Indonesians need. Learn from others not matter who they are, make corrections, be able to accept criticism, introspect and retro. Rebuild Indonesia into a credible society and show to the whole world they mean business, like China.
China used to be among one of the more corrupted country. Look right now what was the change, shall we say the last 10 years! This is what it is suppose to mean Superpower, not nuclear might! Not showing that you have that this much followers because it just ends up like being a bully. -
Everyone knows that it is hard to eliminate corruption. We must know to what extend the damage was done. There are corruption and discrimination everywhere, but to what extent?
When the majority becomes overwhelming, then the smaller ones will died of.
It is like when a radiating star reaches it’s max, like a busted light bulb, it just die and fade away. Political parties are no different!
In every day life, you just name it politic, social, private etc, there is a start and an end. it is how you start and when you want it to end.
There are still time for Indonesian leaders to make that happened. Sutiyoso recently had the intention to do away with discrimination. He is only in the third protocl level. Without support and counter action from the first and second it is unlikely he will make it.
He needs stern support and action from the President who impose a mandatory executive power to exercise by the second level before reaching Sutiyoso and all others in provinces far and near. Exert mandatory sentence for failure to carry out. incarcerate those extremist and leftist leaders and supporters.
When the ABRI warned Amien Rais that he will be shot if he dares lead the million person march so he just “ciut”. This what I term it as predators and provocators.
Such person should receive mandatory punishment for political manipulation, sabotaging and undermining Indonesia’s security.
In Singapore and Malaysia Anwar was arrested under the ISA Actso was the lawyer that was recently arrested under the ISA Act.
Indonesia had their BIA but stop short of leashing similar Act.
When a country is short of this and short of that, obviously there are loopholes for opportubnist to capitalize on.
So how does the Indonesian government want to start, there must be a beginning and sitting on their butts doing nothing.
And exodus was anticipated during the riot. In order to coerce someone who left to return (with or without their money) there must be something to it otherwise why would they want to return. Be it Chinese , Indian, Arab or Pri’s in Indonesia it doesn’t matter. Those that left had taken money, I would say 5% of Indonesia’s GDP. It is only a drop in the ocean. Just to let you know this is how bakries, Panigoro, Jusuf Kalla, and all those stupid cornies are doing right now in capitalizing on Indonesi’a current weakness and SBY can’t do anything.
I have been watching SBY long before he became President and thought he was a brilliant person. But his hands were tied. This I think a lot of Indonesian needs to help him is to untie him and let him leash his Executive Order and preventing Jusuf Kalla from manipulating his power. -

I cannot imagine why you did not restart the china owned factory that was shut immediately after the riot? And why you did not restart your own chemical factory also.
I am sure the rioters focused their attention to supermarkets and not factories, leaving machineries intact.
If the bosses decided to leave, why did you not propose to take over the plant. In tragedies, there are opportunities also.
Malays want to money the easy way. Hence it is very difficult to stop corruption. You should know as in Indonesia, the brokers fee for connections are very steep. So when there is an opportunity, say a riot provocated by the elite malay class, the poor and down trodden took the easy way out, which is to take advantage of the situation and make as much money as possible.
I am sure, in the aftermath, many decent and law abiding Indonesia lost their jobs as their factories shut down. Quick gain at the expense of long term return.
Only way to stop corruption is to ignore any request for bribes.
Countries like china can impose death penalty at will for corruption, but it will be tricky for Indonesia where elites, who control power are also involved.
Best for Indonesia to give citizenship to anyone who have been staying in the country after a number of years, after reviewing their status as residences, such a good behavious, payment of taxes etc.Malays discriminate against the chinese, but will kiss ass the europeans. It is similar in Malaysia. Maybe due to european etiquette.
In order to understand why chinese are discriminated, maybe it was due to how Indonesians malays were treated by their employers during the early years of mass chinese immigration into Indonesia and that somehow got entrenched into malay psyche that chinese acted arrogantly towards the local natives?

The reason the Taiwanese/HK not China did not restart the factory was after observing the situation for more than six months we find that it will be hard for them to recover and the prospect was not too bright, not that quick gain as many thought. The factory is now perhaps greying.
The chemical factory was the same reason we left without rebuilding it.Unless there is a good reason why should we restart! When we created hundreds if not thousand of jobs to the pris and ending up in such a predicament. That reason should be from G level.

I have different angle to comment the 2 contrasting opinions between Dragonwall & Cuk/Sputjam.
Let say I am a super human being who can put dual paradigms, the two different paradigms are influenced by the individual’s idelology whom he/her believes. I can easily say the Chinese’s ideology of liFe like what Dragonwall had correctly point it out is true & correct.
In the other side, using Cuk/Sputjam’s ideology framework then their both statements are applicable too within their ideologies constraints.
I am saying there might be an ideology clash in this world, with Islam sponsoring orthodox way of liFe who oppose at any expenses toward the progression. I mean, how we can expect people like Cuk who keep on thinking human life are just temporary and all his priorities are focused for securing his second life in the heaven ?
Understood & it is fair to say that these 2 ideologies will NEVER see eye to eye FOREVER.
BUT I demand some explanations from Cuk/Sputjam,a. If your ideology teach you not to care about life progression, wealth, power, etc then why do you hate the Chinese businessman who may bring out their money for the sake of business choice decision ? why should you care about it ?

Fyi, amok is unique Indonesia’s term which mean you are above the law, untouchable, can do anything you like, there is no such equivalent word in other language, yes it is true, it may be such a useless word that other civilized countries do not need it
c. Why do you chose to believe your current ideology ?, the template are very very clear, Muslim Fatah fight against Muslim Hamas killing each other everyday witnessed by the Jewish who are amazing to see the Palestine brotherhood forgotten their real enemy. Not to mention the similar fights in Iraq, Iran & Afganistan ?

We chose this idelogy and beliefs because we 100% confidence that this beliefs is only way to attain “Nirwana” or immortal happiness while other idelogy and beliefs is only offering nothing except a fragile and temporary happiness.
Tell me why I have to believe to other believe who already clearly promoted annihilation, racism and destruction around the globe.
Every ideology without exception have their own bright and dark sides and don’t zoom your view to specific time frame and location but broaden it to wider view. Look history China Civilization how many chinese killed and starving to death during Mao anti-culture campaign and checked what happened in North Korea , Laos and Kambodia.

It’s been about 9 years and 3 months by now, since my grandparents were killed during the riots in 1998, yes they were the innocent victims, and they never cheated our country in anyway, we even spoke Indonesian language as our mother tounge(many malaysian chinese still stick with their own dialect to this day and they only speak a very poor bahasa melayu) so let`s switch our position and think for just one second, people say put ourselves in each other shoes, can you feel the pain if this bloody incident is happened to your innocent family members, your sister and brother? not to mention your old and helpless grandparents if you have one, so let`s learn from the bad incident, not only this catastrophe caused an unnecessary death and destuction but our country economy is now backward by 15 years.
To my dear Indonesian`s brothers and sisters, now it`s not a time to debate and argue on who is right and wrong but let`s teach our young generation not to repeat this painful scenario again, and tell them to stand for each other`s unity as an Indonesian nation regardless the races and skin colours, THIS IS OUR RESPONSIBILITY AND IT STARTS FROM THE SCHOOL AND HOME.

Yes, promote education, create jobs (think who is good in this, Chinese, no? This is everywhere, in this side of the world too. I can say many positive things about them, their children intelligence, hard work).
In their business, usually when they are on the point of closing and there is a customer coming, they will stay open to seve the customer. What it means is this customer will come back, bring friends and perhaps other customers will enter while serving this one customer. This is what I always admire of the Chinese.
It is embaraasing for them to see their fellow Chinese begging. anywhere! They would not hesitate to call the person and give them a job.

Looking from afar and thinking clearly can anybody tell who is absolutely/pure Chinese (unless they descend from aboard the plane from inland China) and who is pribumi(yes, where did this pribumi come from?

Actually, those separation is only game of perception, the clear example is the ransack in Lim Swi Liong home was under watching of Anton Medan (Chinese also).
So here the category, Chinese, Rich, non-moslem and you are in bad luck hence you will becomes eligimate target for run amok, looting and robbing.
Why I said so because I live in”perumahan” with many Chinese Families live peacefully among the moslem poor pribumi like me but no chinese skin get scratch at that run amok time even most Jabodetabek was burning the reason is very simple we are the same poor people and suffered the same painful.

Cukurungan, do you mean I have to be a poor chinese and moslem to be left unscratched? I was once a poor person too, yes it was painful but I never envied or hated the rich people, instead I learn from the wisdom of these successful people, no wonder BIRDS WITH THE SAME FEATHERS FLOCK TOGETHER BUT IT DEPENDS ON WHAT TYPE OF BIRD YOU WANT TO BE. -

Come on friend I don’t hate anyone include chinese what I said, it doesn’t mean become recommendations to anyone to determine whether you’re eligimate target or not but it was rather explaination of the facts already happened at that time and Julita asked us an explanation.
Some of our goods Muslim brother already explained that our faith is peaceful and we are the most peace lover human but some of guys in this forums don’t agree with that. Hence why I should bother with those guys and I explained in this forums many time we are ready for anything, if you want peace with us, it is almost 90% of quran verses recommend and praise peaceful solution but if you want war with us we have 10% of quran verses how to address violence and War.

In a topic that is discussing ANTI CHINESE VIOLENCE & DISCRIMINATION AGAINST CHINESE INDONESIAN.
It seemed most of them are interested in viewing their point on how to degrade the Chinese, About Singapore etc etc.
Has that got anything to do with the topic. If everyone is interest in how to avoid another catastrophe, another killing fields then it is more important to discuss on how to resolve the problem and not talking of past glories.
Every Chinese in this blog is interested to know what hapenned and what will happen in the viewpoint of a pri. Instead of providing a viewpoint most of them are discussing how to vent their anger, their hate and being jealous of how the Chinese gets rich while condoning (though indirectly) the pri’s on getting rich by being corrupt.
Singapore is a country that will not rush into the action just because an opportunity arise. A good example not long ago in Hong Kong when Singtel wanted to take over HK Telecommunication when Lee Ka Shing’s son fought hard to get it under his Cyberprogram that failed badly.
Do you think Singapore or Temasek gets into Satelindo being a capitalist or was that an invitation? And when Satelindo loss heavily does that benefits Temasek?. Under such a volatile trading on a share in the bear, do you think Singapore is willing to take the risk?. Do you guys know how much is Singapore’s foreign reserve? Common sense will tell Temasek made a wrong move in rescuing Satelindo. Does anybody know which country’s foreign reserve rank the highest in the world? It’s China.
Mind you China invited Singapore to help build Chendu and other projects in China. Did Singapore rob them of their wealth like being a capitalist. Just like when Temasek had taken Satelindo. Is it a hostile move?
So if those in this blog are trying to help quell Anti Chinese Violence in Indonesia, then stop making as though this into an Anti Chinese Violence.
Unless there are people who are only interested in showing that the pri’s should not be blame or that they should be blame less.
I do not condone what Suharto did. But what he had done before the riot I would say many should keep mum’s (he took the blame when his crony got corrupt) for the prosperity he had brought to Indonesia which mae many Asean/Asian countries envy for him and made Indonesia proud. After he was impeached how many President had done any improvements for Indonesia. Do you know before the riot Indonesia was doing something like 15 years ahead of 3rd world country, but right now Indonesia had move back at least 10 years behind. Before Indonesia could get up on his feet another disaster happen like Porong!
You should be discussing where Wiranto was at the time of the riot. what Syafrie Syamsuddin did during the riot sending troops to north when south was in trouble and so on. What Prabowo did. Was he scapegoat? possibly. How come during the riot there were army personnel on board helicopter shouting to people to rob and tell them to take what they want. How many of them on the blog had really got right into Indonesia’s politic to understand their political manipulation to achieve their personal quest for power which ultimately ending up getting more money for them. Comparing Philippinese, Burma, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia’s politician to China, Singapore and put them on the table and see the difference. Money does not mean progress but progress means money.
