Discrimination Against Chinese
Sep 27th, 2006, in Society, by PatungLee Kuan Yew says there is systematic discrimination against Indonesians of Chinese descent.
The former president of Singapore, as part of a one-hour address at the Raffles Forum, held in conjunction with the IMF-World Bank Meeting in Singapore, reportedly said that the ethnic Chinese minority population in Indonesia, and Malaysia:
Our neighbors both have problems with their Chinese. They [the Chinese] are successful. They are hard working and, therefore, they are systematically marginalized.
and that this was one reason why Singapore, a Chinese majority state, had to be firm against Malaysia and Indonesia.
Lee Kuan Yew.
Indonesian politicians were quick to react to these statements. Djoko Susilo of the National Mandate Party (PAN), said Yew was a big liar, and:
We are very upset because it has disgraced Indonesia. We will ask the government to send a letter of protest to Lee.
He said that Chinese people were able to work in any area, including the military.
We even have ministers and MP’s [who are Chinese].
Amris Hassan of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), bemoaned the harm Lee’s statement would cause to internal Indonesian cohesiveness, and intra-ASEAN relations.
It is very dangerous for our unity because the false feeling of some people here will be justified, and they will think that marginalization really exists. Beside obstructing our bilateral relations, the remarks also hinder the process of establishing the ASEAN community.
Amris said Lee should issue a public apology and explain himself.

An apology was forthcoming. The Malaysian government’s demanding of such an apology was successful with Lee Kuan Yew saying:
I am sorry that what I said has caused you a great deal of discomfort. ….it is the last thing I wanted.
in a letter to Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

….. I considered myself more Indonesian than Singaporean reason being that I have adapted the Javanese culture for almost 20 years. Most of my time in Indonesia I am throughout Java. From Jakarta, Surabaya, Solo, Malang, Jember.
Dear Ah Kong, ability to speak Bahasa Melayu or Jovo, and travelling throughout Java do not qualify a person as suitably ‘adapted’ to Javanese culture. One has to mix with the local Javanese populace, know their culture, their like and dislikes, etc, etc. Chinese language was once banned in Indonesia so Chinese had no choice but to learn Bahasa. I know Indon-Chineses are proud of being Indonesian, but I have yet to meet one claiming to have fully ‘adapted’ Javanese culture. Well, congratulation, you are first.We are on this blog, bringing up incidents and reminiscing what had hapenned in our lifetime. …..If you are in Jakarta you should know, if not drive around Jakarta and look at places like Daan Mogot, ….. and many many place in Cirebon, Medan, Palembang, Kalimantan etc etc.

Though I am a Singaporean and I said I consider myself more Indonesian that I had “adapted” and that agitates you in disbelief and asked others if they have mingled with them to consider adapted, and with your name you even tried to pass off yourself by comparing to Dayaks, Bugis or Minangkabau.
Our factories, projects and establishments in Indonesia employ hundreds of employees who are mostly Javanese. We eat and work together and even visit their homes, is that not enough mingling to understand them?

I said you would be the first one to know, here is it. I had recently set up a website a month ago to help Indonesians.Even when we were far away from Indonesia, we Chinese were always trying to help the Indonesians be it black, yellow, brown or white.
We tried to make them felt at home by providing them what is necessary and extending the assistance they so badly need.Here you are trying to play big brother to everyone, so tell us what have you done for what your Indonesian brothers. What have you done for the Indonesian people? At least I prove beyond shadow of doubts.

I am just enjoying this male ego-oriented discussion/arguement. Looking at it, no wonder there are so many wars/civil wars in this world. It seems like an endless discussion without any specific goal let alone a win-win situation. And this is only in a web forum, so I can imagine how sensitive some issues are when taken up to a political level. Regardless the race, if one feels more superior than the others, then, good luck trying to achieve peaceful solution.

As for Indonesia, yes, well, there have been huge strides forward in terms of respecting Indonesians of Chinese descent and Chinese-Indonesians in the past few years. There’s a lot of work to be done. But the Chinese shouldn’t take it too personally (easy for me to say, I know).
It’s more than discrimination. It’s much, much worse. But it’s a wider symptom of stupidity borne of ignorance in the wider population. That can only be fixed by building a proper civil society, intelligensia, public education, legal representation.
So some of the Chinese business community (as well as Padang, Bugis, Batak etc). will actually have to start paying taxes. Let’s also not pretend alot of Indonesian Chinese don’t look down on the ‘pri’s’ as lazy and incompetent. Sorry, that’s just the way it is.
We’ll all have to pull together on this one — getting rid of stupid prejudice.

They assisted the sultans in thwarting the Thai invasion of the malacca (yep, the Thais and malays were fighting some five hundred years ago) and chased the Thais out of temasek (present day Singapore).
Sultans of malay states were invited to Beijing, given concubines etc.
As you can see, relationship between Malays and chinese were not so hostile initially.
How the hostilities started must be from the second wave of migrants. (lower class and mostly from southern districts of china).

Saddam Hussein of Iraq when their people were suffering his son owns sports car and the whole ging gang had so much cash stash away and when the Iraqis were tired of his nonsensical killings which eventually led to to his downfall and dug his own grave.
Take a look how many times Indonesia was given loans, IMF, Asia Funds, WB and etc how was the money spent. Each and every political leaders who made their promise when elected to seat in office ended up with plenty of money to themselves. I knew of several in protocol level who in the presence of their Chinese associates are good friends but behind their back they hated them so much.
