Agnes Monica & Allah PeduliAgnes Monica annoys Malaysians for unusual reasons, with her new hit song Allah Peduli.

The province of Selangor in Malaysia has banned pop singer Agnes Monica’s latest tune “Allah Peduli” (God Cares) because of its use of the term “Allah” to refer to the Christian God, possibly including Jesus Christ/Jesus of Nazareth/the prophet Isa.

Mohamad Adzib Mohd Isa, the head of the Religious Court in Selangor, says the song must not be played or sung anywhere in the province. Non-Muslims who say “Allah” to refer to their god(s) are subject to a 1,000 ringgit (about $300) penalty, he says. antara

There has been a long-running dispute in Malaysia as to whether non-Muslims, particularly Christians, are permitted to say “Allah” for “God”. The dispute began when authorities objected to the Catholic daily the Herald using the word, with this case currently going through the courts.

Meanwhile, the offensive song, Allah Peduli by Agnes Monica:

    @ AAB…

    Mate, you are a lot different looking in real life than your avatar.

    I saw AM and her beau out shopping the other week 😀

    At least now I know what you look like in real life.

    Or is the “she” a different she?

  4. Aluang Anak Bayang says:

    scary .. some people can still recognise me without my hedge. The pic in the avatar was taken some 15 years ago. I no longer keep the hedge as my kids hate it.

    Sometime last year (early August) somewhere along a shopping strip near the Randwick plaza, a white bloke came up to me and asked if I am Aluang from IM. My immediate thought was you or Andy. After a mild shock, I said he had the wrong guy. Wonder who that was, anyone in IM who tap me on my shoulder last year better own up. He was in his 20s, 170 cm, red haired.

  5. Rob says:

    @ AAB…

    Could not have been me. I have not been in Australia since 2003. Besides my avatar is pretty much what I look like (the photo was taken in Darling Harbour last time I was home). So, I fail on the red hair part and the 170 cm part and the 20s part.

    Good luck with getting someone to fess up on this one.

    So I think there has got to be an absolute reason for the taboo on incest, but without religion where do absolutes come from, isn’t it all relative?

    My sister has had herself cloned and I’ve fallen desperately in love with her clone, that was deliberately made sterile. Unfortunately I can’t find any religion that gives a decisive answer whether I may shag her – the clone – or not. But somehow I feel that it is wrong. Can somebody help me out?

    Agnes, I Love You …

    Me too.

  7. David says:

    absolute reason for the taboo on incest,

    Interestingly, the taboo is not absolute, as the discussion above with andrey illustrates.

    but without religion where do absolutes come from, isn’t it all relative?

    The problem with this hypothesis is that it does not then explain why it crosses over though different religions and cultures. It also does not explain the non religious having the same taboo (and even more so in cases when looking at the 1st cousin issue).

    You would then ask, why do certain taboos exist for things that were never mentioned in any religious text or by any prophet?

    That is why the reasons are more complex than either just biologically utilitarian or just religious.
    The reasons are psychological, and as such are built on a complex social evolution.

    Basically, the family unit naturally creates a certain kind of relationship between its members. Injecting a sexual relationship into that, runs completely contrary. This has an effect on how we develope such taboos.

    We can even see this on a smaller scale
    For instance, you may have a friend who has a friend who is a female which the two grew up together, and you ask them “Hay, she’s hot, you dating her?” and he responds “Yuk, no way, she’s like my sister”

    As the way we view these relationships becomes more ingrained, the more severe the psychological impact is on us, to the point that they define our morality.
    The greater the impact, the greater the taboo

    DS, ‘taboo’ was the wrong word on my part, because that implies social construct….maybe ‘prohibition’ would be better. I mean when people believe that the rule against doing something is from God, that it is eternal and unalterable, not dependent on anything, least of all on any negative consequences that may ensue from doing it, i.e absolute…..it doesn’t matter for these purposes whether it is true that the prohibition comes from God, of course it doesn’t, but that people believe it does, through religion. Take that away and you have a slippery slope to moral relativism and legalising or decriminalising things like adult consensual incest, etc., that is the argument I believe Cuk was trying to get across….

    @ Rob,

    It caught me unaware. When I came round, I immediately knew it wasn’t you or Andy. Silly thought like ‘am I going to cop a punch’ flashed over my head. This man is much younger with different facial features from your avatar. Couldn’t be Andy though, as he resided in Melbourne. He was polite. Spoke to him briefly. He mentioned about living in Bali with his gf, and they both clothing designers of some sort. Probably would have fished him out if I posted in IM back then.

  17. Zee Caniago says:

    Hahaha.. it’s really such a misleading decision. Really, the term “Allah” is not used by Islam only.
    It has been used by several teachings/beliefs before that. It’s been derived from words in many languages (like Hebrew and Aramaic).

    I guess whoever suggests this decision really needs to revise it. Also, please dig the knowledge more 🙂

    Cheers,

  21. farel says:

    @Laredion,

    No,Jesus’s mother tounge is Hebrew.He was born in Bethlehem,remember?
    Which is in Israel.approx.10km from south of Jerusalem.They speak hebrew there.

  22. diego says:

    But I thought Jesus’ mother lang. is aramaic?

    (thanks Mel for such an educative movie)

  23. Kris says:

    When Jesus was around, Hebrew had mostly fallen out of use amongst the Jews in daily life (also the Holy Land was Roman-occupied back then anyways), largely confined to liturgy. Most Jews, including Jesus, spoke Aramaic, then one of the dominant languages of the region (next to Greek, and to a less extent, Latin). Following farel’s logic, Jesus must have spoken Arabic, because Bethlehem now is in the Palestinian territories, not in Israel…

  24. muhammad el fatih says:

    Alaahh..

Tapi salah siapa?? Salah kita sendiri la sebab tak tekankan aspek akidah dengan kuat dalam sistem pendidikan.. budak2 sekolah ramai tak faham konsep ketuhanan sebenar. Kalau kita betulkan diri kita, tak payah risau la dorang nak buat apa pon..

    It’s true that the basic concept of God between those three Abrahamic faiths are the same. It is ONE GOD and He is incomparable and He is unique. But in Christianity, they have this trinity doctrine which is so confusing that it does not make sense at all. Only Judaism and Islam maintain the pure monotheism creed where both religions do not ever compare God to anything and even a sketch of God is considered blasphemous. Christianity in contrast, has gone too far away by the creed of our father, Abraham peace be upon him.

  25. Aluang Anak Bayang says:

    @ Muhammad El Fatih

    … and they are all desert cults. Middle Eastern gods must be very sweathy, oily and thirsty to think they are the ‘ONE’, incomparable and unique. Yet they lived in black stone called kaaba, and one even impregnated an innocent earthling. Allah and Jehovah need some growing up, and take lesson from our respected Nyai Loro Kidul.

    Our tropical rainforest is inhabited by mature Gods and prophets alike. Real Paradise is garden with green leafy trees, where flowers blossom, and teemed with wildlife; not shifting sands.

  26. zekky says:

    Why are so many Southeast Asian Muslims hell-bent on trying to imitate Arabs?

    I myself have Indonesian-Arab blood, but find it ridiculous how so many Indonesians and Malaysians think that you’re a step closer to God if you try to speak Arabic.
    Who care if it’s ‘Allah’ or ‘God’ or ‘Tuhan’ or ‘Yahweh’?

  27. Odinius says:

    @farel

    Sorry, Laredion was right. Jesus likely spoke Aramaic as his native tongue, though perhaps also Hebrew and Greek.

    @muhammed el fatih

    Nice to see someone note what is so logical and historically evident, yet too often obscured by silly 20th Century politic: the essential theological similarity between Islam and Judaism

    @zekky

    Agree. They are all just words for the same concept.

  28. muhammad el fatih says:

    @ Aluang Anak Bayang

    I believe that God@Allah sent revelations to ALL nations and prophets had come to warn their people to believe in The Creator. Islam was never founded by Muhammad BUT the term “ISLAM” is a VERB which means submitting oneself to The Creator of the Heavens and the Earth. Muhammad was one of the prophet and he was sent to the whole humanity. When I studied the history of Muhammad, it became very clear that this was a prophet of God. Maybe you have a different perspective. But the message of Islam is very clear and it is pure monotheistic and it makes sense so much.

    In the Quran, God says that He sent revelations to ALL nations! And when He says ALL nations, it should’ve been clear enough that it includes those who were in China or India or the Aztecs and Mayans. The message is simple, to worship One God. Time made those people went astray when they started to carved things out of stones and woods, they started to make images of God and thus over time creating a whole new religion. It was always Islam in the first place. For example, there’s a sect in Hinduism which is a strict monotheism.

    @Zekky

    Yes, I agree with you that we in the region of Nusantara are quite obsessed with Arabic cultures. We have failed to differentiate between cultures and Islam. For example, wearing turban. Some of us think that wearing turban will make them better Muslims of some sort but this is silly because we know that it is purely tradition of Arabs and that Abu Jahl, the enemy of Islam also used to wear turban. He did not make it to paradise though. LOL.

    But I personally think that it is quite important to learn Arabic language so that we have better access to the original language of the Quran.

    Peace.

  29. Aluang Anak Bayang says:

    @ Muhammad el fatih

    But I personally think that it is quite important to learn Arabic language so that we have better access to the original language of the Quran.

    Though it is to our advantage to learn as many foreign lanugages as we can; why do we need to learn Arabic to know how to beat our wife, hoky-poky toilet etiquette and hate the Jews? What exactly can we learn from a backward culture that have no moral value and far worst than our southerly bogan neighbour? The quran may be a magnum opus to the Pakistanis and the Iranians, but the Javanese are far too cultured and matured to treat it as a book from God. Only a silly Arab god would author such a book.

    A Javanese learn English to know his enemy. A Javanese speak enough Arabic to be on guard. A Javanese learn Chinese to be able to understand what was spoken behind his back.

    Muhammad, behind the veneer of your broad smile and smooth talk, there is a vicious plan to arabanise the Javanese. Look at our recent polls. The Javanese has spoken. The next time, another Indonesian maid is raped by Allah’s favourite tribe in Arabia, hope it is one of your family.

    Peace.

  30. muhammad el fatih says:

    @ Aluang Anak Bayang

    It is funny that you whine over what I said. LOL. But the thing is, if you think that your belief is right, then prove it to me. I think from what I’ve learned about Islam that there are quite sufficient amount of proofs.

    The Quran was revealed among the Arabs in the 7th century. Let’s not forget that. And it was revealed to a human named Muhammad throughout 23 years. Muhammad was the greatest liberator of all times. He liberated women from being a sexual and trade object among the Arabs of that time, he abolished the killing of baby girl, he gave right for women to divorce and to vote. All of these things were not even practiced in the Europe’s Dark Ages 5 centuries later. Even America let women vote just over the past 50 years!!

    You said the Quran gives instruction on how to beat women? You are too ignorant. First, the statement is totally wrong. Second, it is out of context. God in the Quran tells on how to deal with a disobedient and wrongful wife and He did not say put 100 lashes behind your wife’s back. There is no such details in the Quran. The Prophet never beat his wives and he was the best of husbands.

    You claimed that the Quran is anti-semitic? One more ignorant statement of yours! Why don’t you open the Holy Bible right now and read the Old Testaments. Then, you’d realize how anti-semites the Bible is. LOL. Those are criticisms from God to some of the Children of Israel in the Middle East because they disobeyed God!

    If you claim your whatever Nyai Kiro bla bla.. is the path of the truth, then prove it to me. Don’t just claim it. That’s not enough. Prove it. What is your purpose of life here in this world? How did this universe originate? Who created it? Who was this creator?? Answer these types of questions and make sense out of it.

    I am no Javanese, I am a Malay from Malaysia. Anyways, who cares? Jawa, Sunda, Melayu or whatever from Nusantara, we’re not really different. You didn’t read my last comment didn’t you? I said that those who confuse between the Arabic cultures and Islam are stupid. So, read it well.

    Peace.
