Governor of North Sumatra, Syamsul Arifin, said on 8th October at an occasion marking Pancasila Day that all elements of the nation must continually fight against and eradicate atheist beliefs among the people.
Atheism, which seeks to erase Pancasila and which once threatened the nation in the guise of the Communist Party of Indonesia (PKI), and still does, has to be guarded against, particularly because it still finds support among sections of the poor.
Syamsul said children should be taught from primary school through to university to hate atheism, so that the creed could as far as possible be obliterated.

On the internet at least some Indonesians seem happy to declare themselves as unbelievers.
Running an “affiliation” search on the social network site Friendster.com for “atheist” brings up about 144 matches friendster.com, while “ateis” produces 185 odd results friendster.com, although more than a few seem to be claiming to be atheist as some kind of joke.
On the same site, created on January 23rd, 2007 is the “Atheist Indonesia” group friendster.com, with 76 members and a fairly active message board, and some of its members seem to be active in an Indonesian language Atheist Wikipedia. ateisindonesia.wikidot.com

What the old testament says (about seafood, stoning, cursing, working on the Sabbath) is superseded by the new testament, what the old testament says (about homosexuality) is not superseded by the new testament.

Bro M – How many times have I presented studies by well respected people as evidence and the best the atheists here can do was make up their own versions of why these studies resulted in the way that they did. If we look at the Shroud of Turin the scientific evidence is overwhelming that the Shroud is authentic. All the scientific results are peered reviewed and displayed for all the world to see but somehow your argument is that the scientists involved are Christian conspirators. Your proof? Well you attempted to have a reporter who reports on science fiction refute all the evidence and papers these scientists collected for more than a decade despite the fact he doesn’t have the credentials needed to prove anything and interestingly enough no one gets to peer review his results.
On the matter of homosexuality I have presented evidence collected by well respected Universities and Institutions in regard to anything I said here on IM but you athesists refuse to acknowledge it except to say all this overwhelming evidence is flawed. I made my case to demonstrate that most, if not all, have been victims of abuse by homosexual adults at some time during their development years but none of you could refute the evidence and worse you still refuse to accept the connection.
Homosexuality for any person is a curse as I have demonstrated many times through documented research and if you can disprove anything I have claimed then do so intelligently which to date seems foreign to atheists here on IM. Now enough of your mockery as it only demonstrates your arguments weakness in the face of real evidence and truth.

You do understand that the vast majority of the world rejects the idea that Christ died on the cross and came back to life don’t you? Lucky for us he did it at Easter, so we could get that pagan egg thing happening. It is a concern however for us here in Indonesia that you would so callously disrespect their teachings about one of Islam’s chosen. After all Islam lays claim to Jesus as well except the Quran was a later ‘corrected’ version apparently (bit like your new testament I guess) but he was never resurrected. Gee it’s confusing for us laymen, you cant all be right..ergo….

Pope’s resignation? meh, its not like he’s any more likely to get prosecuted for aiding and concealing child abusers, so no biggie, just means the Catholics’ll either end up losing congregation because they choose someone who’s too conservative, or not conservative enough, either way, they lose.
Don’t see how that plays into the hands of the hordes of atheism though, Popes have died and (less recently, granted) resigned in the past, and these haven’t sounded the deathknell of the Roman church…Oh well, time to go read some Hitchens, if the end times are upon us, I’d like to have my defence in order for when I’m being judged

Typical mindset. Many non-religious aren’t that interested of having the Earth. We are the Earth together with nature.
Personally I’m not against any religious organisation or ideological group but they need to be treated equally like anyone else. The RC Church has got to be the most despicable for their brutal past, especially in the Americas, the countless sex abuse cases and, even worse, the deliberate cover-up and hindering of authorities investigating these cases, notwithstanding the efforts of individual Catholics trying to do good. It’s also quite laughable for Patrick to warn against homosexuality when his beloved church is full of gays. One of the reasons for the pope to resign was the existence of a gay faction (chuckle) in the Vatican engaged in organizing sex pours in and around Rome with many of the high clergy involved.
We can easily conclude the so-called perfect dogma is failing and morally bankrupt.

New data just released this week shows by Dr. Guilio Fanti of the University of Padua concluded that the controversial 1988 Carbon dating of the Shroud of Turin was indeed flawed. Using more modern techniques they concluded that the Shroud could have come from the first century. Another win for Team God… 🙂

I cannot vouch for the authenticity of the following quote from an alleged interview with that Dr.Fanti but somehow it sounds like the kind of thing one could expect from another member of that team:

Well seems like a fair and objective way to begin a scientific analysis :-).
It would appear the Vatican knows more that it is letting on as well referring to the cloth as an “Icon” rather than a relic.
However, who cares..real or not. I personally think not a chance in hell but hey that is not important. If people wish to prostrate themselves before a piece of cloth or behind the great silver teapot tis no worry of mine unless they block my driveway.

Hi Oigal – I missed you! Anyway, it amazes me why in the mind of an atheist there is nothing beyond the physical world, but yet, they cannot stop discussing this nothingness. It’s as if they are trying to reassure themselves that nothingness is the preferred state after death?But maybe something else is gnawing away at them? Perhaps it is as the bible states an inate knowledge of God is within them and they cannot accept a being that they cannot use any of the five senses to experience? Spirituality is a gift from God that must be nurtured and developed over time. Just as we can strengthen our physical body or brain we can also feed our spirituality. Rather than seeing atheists with no spirituality, they must be seen as people with underdeveloped or even malnourished spirituality. They are the 90 pound weaklings of spirituality who hate to exercise. “No pain, no gain” ;D

That said, always fun to indulge you. So your point is if we keep telling ourselves that BM’s noodly deity really exists then it will? I will grant you the theory has a fair bit of support as it is the central premise of Peter Pan (wee I can fly) and Puff the Magic Dragon.
However, your reference to “no pain no gain” from where I live I certainly see the pain (abuse, murder and oppression) that religion brings every day, on the other hand pretty hard to see any gains (in fact we are retreating into the dark ages at a great rate of knots).

Ha ha ha! Love your jokes Oigal as they are drier than the Australien land that you come from. Please sir, we already demonstrated many times in the past that great atheists like Stalin, Mao, Castro etc., make the atrocities commited in the name of religion seem rather amateurish. If we need an extreme example of atheism at its best let us only look to North Korea as a modern example of the great utopia that atheism produces. Now lets contrast that with South Korea, a largely religious people, and by now you get the picture 🙂
Atheism’s anthem “Imagine”, written by John Lennon, blaming religion for the world’s ills is just that, imagining a world where everyone is in perfect harmony without God. So far the atheists have muddled, rather badly, every opportunity given them to produce such a people and nation. Ask yourself, would you rather be a Christian in South Korea or an atheist in North Korea?

Psst Patrick, read the newspapers and see what is at the core of world’s violence (and for that matter child abuse). I grant you its not all your particular God at the moment (although he has had a good run at the poster child for mayhem and violence) never the less it does not change the facts.
As for North Korea, just another cult with God head figure. Qualifies in all aspects as a religion right down to demanding the masses abandon rational thought via blind obedience.
See your lads are doing job in Australia at the moment. When asked why the church had taken no action and in fact covered up and protected child abusers for over 50 years, the arch bishop of Melbourne smirked and said “better late than never”. Really don’t get it, do they Patrick?

Many religious people are always quick to point to communism when trying to warn for atheism but are too blind to see such ideologies are striking similar to their own, as explained by Oigal. The fact that millions of people are non-religious but are committed to and fighting for freedom of thought/religion and are living just and meaningful lives doesn’t raise in their limited brains which are obviously poisoned with outdated views.

@Oigal – thank you for once again posting that letter concerning Leviticus. My guess is that it’s like comfort food for you? Anyway, those laws were meant to seperate the Jews from all other people and nations for the purpose of making them holy, as God, (symbolized by dwelling in the Ark) was among them. In the New Testament we learn from Jesus is that He is the fulfillment of the Old Covenent that God had with the Jews and that God has brought, through Jesus, a New Covenent that included the Gentiles. Read Mark 7: 14-19 and Colossians 2: 16-17 and 20-23. The reason Homosexulaity is still considered an abomination is that it goes against creation as God intended so it contrary to natural law and contrary to reason.
I believe this also answers most, if not all, of SoapDodgers points. Unfortunately, decadent Rome is what homosexuality and adultery brought to the Empire. Thank God (<- Pun) for those pesky Christians who restored, through the teachings of Christ, the real meaning of marriage and family,and as I earlier stated,as Christianity rapidly grew homosexuality and adultery shrank and became almost non-existent. As we have discussed in the past God is like the North Star, a compass in the Sky, true and unmoving. Man, whenever he attempts to change morality to suit his own selfish needs, move further and further away from God's intentions and eventually un-natural and decadence starts to become normal as we now see in Western Countries.
