To understand the true meaning of this phrase it is absolutely pointless consulting MS. Word, you have to understand the derivatives in Classical Arabic. Some meanings can be found here: Quranicteachings.co.uk

It must be borne in mind that there is a specific word in Arabic language for female slaves and this word has been used at least twice in the Quran, once as a singular [“amatun” which is used in 2:221] and secondly as a plural [“imaaun”, which is used in 24:32].

A better replacement phrase would be “those that are under your guardianship or protection”.

  3. sgn says:

    Dear Mohammed Khafi,
thanks for your suggestion. That’s nice. However, your suggestion does not align with many translations we found in the internet (including with an Al Qur’an with the translation I had before).

    http://www.Muslim.org/english-Quran/Quran.htm
… females who were taken prisoners in war.

    Translation in Indonesian Language ….

    ar-risalah.or.id

Budak in Indonesian language means “slave”..

In Malay, it is not translated to “budak” (child) but “hamba” (servant).
But, the word “pakailah” (use it) is too much, isn’t it?

    —–

[Should any of forumners here has the translation in Italian, Spain, Deutch, French or Mandarin, please let me know].

Opsss sorry, I think this is a bit away from the main topic. Alfarini was neither under Gym’s possession, a budak nor a hamba, wasn’t she?

    Cheers,
    sgn

    sgn,

Many people in the Middle Ages used to write that the “Earth was flat” and that the “Sun orbited the Earth” that didn’t necessarily make those statements true.

If you have a good heart and wish to find goodness, you will, if you have a bad heart and wish to find the bad it can be interpreted that way also.

“Goodness and evil are not equal. Repel evil with what is better. Then the person with whom you have enmity may become your intimate friend! And no one will be granted such goodness except those who exercise patience and self-restraint; none but people of the greatest good fortune. 41:34-35

If you obey the majority of people on earth, they will divert you
from the path of GOD. They follow only conjecture; they only guess. 6:116

    ——

    sgn,

    Ponder on this also:

“Those who listen to the Word, and follow the best (meaning) in it: those are the ones whom Allah has guided, and those are the ones endued with understanding.” 39:18

Let them start the party, you can do it too.

  7. Mohammed Khafi says:

    rinni,

Hey dude, it’s legal by law and its okay by religion

They have met none of the conditions in Al Quran and none of the conditions under the Indonesian Marriage law of 1974! How can it possibly be legal by law and okay by religion?

  8. Boniangga Anugrah says:

Following up to what Khafi mentioned,
it is true that it is not legal by Indonesian law. Moreover, I dare you all to look again about the term Poligamy in Quran. What condition of which this action is permitted to be done?
Aa has definetely forgotten about how his children and wife react to it. It’s merely an egoistic decision. A bad example from the most used-to-be-respected Islamic leader.

  9. Fanglong says:

    Sorry friends !

I thought there was nothing to speak of, ’twas my mistake…

  10. Angel says:

By reading all these posted comments, it depicts corruptions (and misunderstanding) among mankind. I hope that everyone here is merely speaking their mind and will not get an ultimate emotional disturbance and convey which or what religion is right or wrong. I do believe we all wants peace. 🙂

  11. Fanglong says:

Hello everyone ! Here are some remarks that came to me while reading this thread.
I like what Indo-Muslim says on Dec. 4, 4:42 pm.
A little message to Ismail : Hi friend, in your Dec. 4, 7:15 pm comment you say :
“Islam is morally dankrupt” : do you mean dangdut, bankrupt, corrupt or what? Something wicked I guess. Why do you like contradiction that much? Bible reading is as difficult & ambiguous as Qoran reading. Handle with care (if you’re not a specialist).
I think, Si Mohammad Khafi, that here, on this subject, you are too “serious”, let’s say condemning, but I really enjoy reading your comments. You call “twisted” what some (‘Abdul Karîm for instance) take for “straight”, and someone else, your equal as a human being, will just oppose the contrary to it… Aristotle spoke of the equal strength of opposite theses, and the Skeptics chose to “suspend their judgment” : so, who is the genius here who will solve all these “apories” (logical puzzlers). Moreover, M. Khafi, I feel your faith is strong, and you defend democracy, equality, etc. in the light of the sole Coranic text : may you be bless’d for that ! But what about hushing your dislike for Sunnah & Hadith ? There is truth in them as they’ve built fair people & great saints — who praised al-Qur’ân al-Karîm. But I also understand your dislike : the same happens in all religions — differences between interpretations of texts (“scriptures”), logia, etc. Nothing definitive, isn’t it ? In terms of absolute truth, whether you or anyone believes in God or not does not change anything. But if you engage in generosity, self-discipline, patience, etc., the world of appearences will be so much happier…
I also appreciate Roro’s “Take care all etc.” Just that… Shouldn’t we take care of our own business?
I think differenciations between man & woman in rights, payments, evaluation of intelligence etc. are acts of racism : ignorant & useless violence.
Man = Woman !!! Of course with sexual / complementary differences, but NONE, absolutely none in terms of right, etc. How can anyone here think I’m wrong on that point? A man would have more rights to pleasure, being served, paid, caressed, etc. than a woman? How stupid! Man & woman are also economically equal: both are able to earn a penny & spend it. In many a language, masculine is just the root, and feminine has a suffix (a kind of Jewel), like -(iyy)ah in Arabic : Muslim/Muslimah, shâfi’î/shâfi’iyyah… I mean we are equal but the women are more beautiful!…
Then, reading on, I do appreciate Nani’s nervous outburst (Dec. 7, 1:50 am) : keep cool, my friend ! Thanks also to AA Choooo & the 1st com by Michael Smith (aka?).
It seems that male dominance is hard to uproot, but time will come, I hope, when we’ll all be equal — & not only as dust after death!
Then again, reading on, I wonder with Tomaculum about zealotry… And of course I have to conclude: the most prominent point is here again the problem of interpreting Qoran & even Sunnah. There is also the “take it easy” mood available : the ladies will find an arrangement, we’re among “rich” people — and there are so many sadder stories !
(I re-post this because it did not appear”¦)

  12. Mohammed Khafi says:

    Hi Fanglong,

    Well thought out comments!

Maybe I am condemning, but I feel so passionately about people who hide bad behaviour behind their religion. What they do in their personal lives is up to them it is between them and their God, but when they attempt to force others to abide by their beliefs it really fires me up!

All peoples around the world have struggled to throw off the bondage of undemocratic rule, despotism and dictatorship, to have some say in their own destiny, it just saddens me to see a group of people, whatever their religion (just look at George Bush’s use of the Christian right wing), who are willing to throw this away and openly invite dictatorship back into their lives.

All of Gods Scriptures have been sent as a means of doing away with this sort of injustice, to improve human rights, democracy, womens rights, free speech etc, what these people are supporting with their teachings is a retrograde step for an advancing society.

We have thrown off the bonds of Colonialism, we are fighting the bonds of Javanese Feudalism, let us not willingly step into the bonds of Religious Extremism. We all know what will happen if this is allowed to continue unabated, it will be another vehicle for the rich and powerful to control our lives and steal our nations wealth.

Fact: There are more men than women in this world today.

Question: In monogamy, how about those women who will not be able to find a husband with the unbalanced demographics? Stay single the rest of their lives?

Condemning is easy, finding a solution is not!

  14. J4K4 says:

a question for those anti polygamists: you hated polygamy, are you sure you guys are free from adultery? honest answer now.

It is scientifically proven that men have the tendency to love more than one woman, but women don’t have those tendencies. That’s why most men would like to have more than one couple, but women don’t.
Why? Only God knows, He created us.

For men with those tendencies, what should they do? If polygamy is not allowed then should they just commit adultery?

Let’s tackle the more serious matters first!

  15. Mohammed Khafi says:

    gigqlas said:

Fact: There are more men than women in this world today.

Quite true below the age of 16:

Male/female sex ratios are typically around 105/100 at very young ages because naturally more boys than girls are born, with sex ratios tending to equalize by adulthood, as more males than females die. However, in some countries, female infanticide, neglect of female newborns, and selective abortion of female fetuses have resulted in male/female ratios of over 108/100 at very young ages.

*Based on United Nations, World Population Prospects 2004

    gigqlas also said

Question: In monogamy, how about those women who will not be able to find a husband with the unbalanced demographics? Stay single the rest of their lives?

According to your statement above and supporting evidence from United Nations surveys, there are more than enough men for all the women in the world.

During the adult phase of life between the ages of 16-64 numbers of males and females are balanced, not just in the rest of the world but also in Indonesia:

    Gender ratio:
    at birth: 1.05 male(s)/female
    under 15 years: 1.04 male(s)/female
    15-64 years: 1 male(s)/female
    65 years and over: 0.77 male(s)/female
    total population: 1 male(s)/female (2005 est.)

If that is not clear enough evidence that God wishes one woman for one man I don’t know what is?

  16. Mohammed Khafi says:

    J4K4 said:

They should have more self control, this is not about love it is about lust, we are not chimpanzes, we are human beings!

Hiding your faults behind religious pretexts is a gross sin.

What should we do with the men who have tendencies to cheat, lie, steal, act violently, have sex with minors, are we going to find religious excuses for all these failings as well?

If you think you good at it, that means your knowledge is the poorest. If you think you are less than good that doesnt mean that your knowledge is the poorer.so mind yourself, let all of these be judge by Allah swt himself not by you all.

    Hey Ismael,
You are not talking about aa gym, but claiming the wrong belief that u have on Bible. U said Bible is right? Bible is corrupt, no doubt about that. Stop listening to your priest. You even dont need to read Quran. Analyse your bible carefully, most of the verses on natural science are all wrong. If Bible were from God, how come your God gives wrong information about what He has created.
This is not about AA Gym anymore. You dont need to comment on him. Find the priests that comitted adutry in your churches, and AA Gym is a holy man compared to your priests. Dont interfere with Muslims discussion. Read the bible carefully, and you will find some stories on Holy people that committed incest, homosexuallity and lesbi. Just think of your bible before saying something about Holy Quran.

  24. Hassan says:

santi: luckily Islam is not based on your words.. if so, then the world will have some serious population issues, specifically on the topic of procreation. you know, men being castrated and all. plus the human right’s issues will be quite overwhelming, i think.

  25. Hassan says:

    I quote from someone here:

“Pretty lady? My foot, she looks trashy and cheap. Teh Ninih is a million times better than that cheap looking b*tch.”

Quran 49:11 “O ye who believe! Let not some men among you laugh at others: It may be that the (latter) are better than the (former): Nor let some women laugh at others: It may be that the (latter are better than the (former): Nor defame nor be sarcastic to each other, nor call each other by (offensive) nicknames: Ill-seeming is a name connoting wickedness, (to be used of one) after he has believed: And those who do not desist are (indeed) doing wrong.”

  26. Santi says:

I can’t be bothered to read the Quran so that particular teaching doesn’t apply to me. I call people names whenever I please, truth is women like her (regardless of race and religion) are dime a dozen, trash, home wrecker, cheap and bitch. Kappish!

  27. Santi says:

As far as I’m concerned, some men really deserved to have their menhood hacked HAHAHAHA

  28. Dimp says:

    Hi Santi,

The same goes for the women.

  29. Ihaknt says:

Dimp, what do you mean the same goes for women? If women had manhood, they’re called a he-she or tranny. That’s a different discussion!

  30. Dimp says:

    Hi Ihaknt,

D’oh!! What I meant is that some women need to be treated the same way, when a guy is getting a second wife, it’s not only the man who need to be judged (get his manhood hacked), but the woman as well.
