Expats

Oct 3rd, 2006, in Society, by

On the “quality”, or possible lack thereof, of expatriates in Indonesia.

Visitor Parvita, on the dating Indonesian girls article, makes these, somewhat stinging, remarks about expatriates in Indonesia.

I’ve gone out both with Indonesian and expat men (western and eastern) and my lesson to learn is: expats are just for fun and not to be taken seriously.

Most of them that comes over here, especially the westerners, are those who cannot “compete” in their country. And when they come over here, they make better living because our country pays expats waaaaaay better than nationals. Then they became like kings, thinking that they are superiors, and some girls fall for them. For instance, would you think a very successful and smart lawyer, or businessmen in England would move to a country like Indonesia? And the houses they live in in Kemang, when they go back to their countries, say, Italy, they will just live in a one bedroom apartment (or a studio) with no driver and a really small car, commuting to the city? The place I live and the car I drive currently is much much better than what they have.

I deal with lots of western expats, some of them are my friends. They told me that when they are here, they are handsome. In their countries, they are invisible. There you go, a confession from an Australian.

Some expats are even so obnoxious, having to live in the states for long, I know they are the loser kind but when they are here, they are surrounded by women and think that they are God’s gift to women.

When a smart, rich, independent Indonesian women dates an expat here, that expat must be a really damn good one! [bold added]

Certainly some home truths there, but the “Most of them…” part may not stand up to analysis.

“Parvita” sounds like someone who doesn’t know enough to know he doesn’t know enough. In all likelihood, he only interacts with foreigners to insult them, then sees their response as “proof” of “disgusting foreigners”, rather than what it is: proof of his ignorance and xenophobia. Wisdom listens first, ignorance speaks first.

  2. Ihaknt says:

Pak Mantri, fortunately and unfortunately, I did mean it. Too many muna people, blinded by religious beliefs, and it’s holding back the beautiful country. But I am never ashamed of my background, I cant change it, it’s part of me.

  3. Achmad Sudarsono says:

    Concerned Teacher,

Easy does it, Sunshine. Most of us have been very supportive of you and ripping into Freddy. Didn’t I say it was one of the highest callings ?

On sweepings, yes, it’s not good, but why, I ask, does everyone focus so much on Islamism when where are still so many poverty-related deaths ? Homework: how many people die from terrorism versus dysentery each year (leave out Iraq – that’s a war zone).

Also, it might be fun to correct a few of Fred’s mistakes.

  4. Fred Floggle says:

Lets step back here and recap step by step:

    1. Parvita commented on the poor quality of expats in Indonesia.

    2. Several people made sarcastic retorts.

    3. I agreed with her, and said that the majority are English teachers with 4 week courses, who come to Jakarta for access to women.

    4. Everyone jumped up and down shouting “it isn’t true it isn’t true”.
    .
    5. I gave examples, links and posted copies proving what I was saying.

    6. Achmad then tacitly admitted there was a problem but Indonesians don’t care and wont do anything about it.

    7. Others then agreed there was a small problem, about 5% of English Teachers (love to know where that percentage came from).

    8. Pakmantri mentions “bules” and “sweepings” in the same sentence and now everyone wakes up. Arguments about if anti bule sweepings have ever happened etc.

    9. Now I am told to shut about the “problem” in case I get bules into trouble. AMAZING!!!! No one grasps the idea of throwing these layabouts out of the country. Instead its all my fault for raising the topic. Shades of “lets not mention the Gas Chambers down the road” from the German public around 1944!!! Some of you guys need a reality check!

I am told to be “responsible”. How about telling the people who are causing this problem to act responsibly.

    Now down to business:

Achmad thinks the problem doesn’t exist because he doesn’t read about it in the local papers. Either he is being tongue in cheek here, or he has no idea at all about how Indonesian society works. 50% of what goes on in Indonesia doesn’t make the newspapers for one reason or another. If he does indeed read them he will know that.

Concerned Teacher: your last post is riddled with grammatical errors. I think you are a nice guy, and I am sorry to say this, but it is obvious your first language isn’t English. It pretty well sums up the entire problem. You shouldn’t be teaching English. You should be learning it.

Finally – do we need these expat English teachers? NO. The best English speaking Indonesian I know holds a degree in English, and all of her teachers were locals.

  5. Janma says:

I said it was irresponsible to generalize and say that all 25 thousand english teachers (expats) in indonesia are just here for the pussy and are a detriment for indonesia… you’re not really listening.

  6. Achmad Sudarsono says:

    No Fred, not like that.

It’d be nice if through argument you got everyone to concede your points whilst still arguing.

    1. Parvita was making a huge generalization – but mainly about her own industry. She’s also admitted that 1) She’s had bad romantic relationships with Bules and 2) Is angry because some get paid more than her. So she’s got what we’d call motive for making those claims.

She made those claims a year ago, by the way, so you’re behind the times. For all we know she’s happily married now with some touch-of-the-tarbrush sprogs running ’round.

    2. My case is that Bules aren’t really important in the grand scheme of things here. I argue that you think they are because 1) you are one and 2) you are too isolated from the real Indonesia to know.

Local media is part of it. It’s true alot of things don’t get reported and you need personal networks to get the goss. But alot of things are reported and you can divine goings on from a careful skimming of the media.

    3. Finally, I think your obsession with English teachers is peculiar. It’s a kind of weird Expat elitism parodied in books like “Burmese Days,” by George Orwell. We’re really giving you pet prejudice more attention than it deserves.

    On that note: You win.

  7. Fred Floggle says:

I also take umbrage at Concerned Teachers comments about me spreading “vile filth”:

I talk about adult English teachers supplying young girls Ecstasy so that they will strip off and dance naked in nightclubs. Isn’t THAT the the vile filth?

I talked about a number of bule English teachers being arrested for having sex with children. Isnt THAT the vile filth?

I talked about men who take teaching jobs just to get easy access to vulnerable girls. Isnt THAT the vile filth??

Even he mentions and accepts that some bule English teachers act in this manner. He suggest 5%. I believe based upon anecdotal evidence from students, girls and teachers, that its about 50%.

    That is the vile truth.

Local media is part of it. It’s true alot of things don’t get reported and you need personal networks to get the goss.

I take is the is a concession Achmed.

  8. Achmad Sudarsono says:

    Fred,

I think we’re done on the rational debate, and soon it’ll be time to start hurling childish insults, my trademark.

Just wanted to give you the gentlemanly heads up.

In that spirit, I’ll likely be claiming you’re a failed small-timer living in a kos on the outskirts of Tangerang who was rejected by EF for not having enough “life accomplishments.”

I’ll also be insinuating that you have serious erectile dysfunction and chronic sexual problems and a series of drug convictions from Stadium days in the mid-1990s when you were trying to ingratiate your way into EF. Hope you understand it’s not personal, I’d do this anyway.

    Best,

    Achmad.

  9. Janma says:

God forbid Achmad! I’m almost in danger of liking you!!!

  10. Achmad Sudarsono says:

Yes, it happens, Janma :-). But glad to hear your daughter was ?ok? after the Bali bomb.

  11. Janma says:

yeah, by some miracle she was ok… the taxi went flying through the air and then imploded, she got glass all over her, stumbled out and ran… the driver must have been knocked unconscious and didn’t get out… it blew up in a gas tank explosion just after that and the driver was killed and all they found of the taxi was the number plate on the roof of a nearby building, she had barely a scratch on her… very very lucky.

  12. Achmad Sudarsono says:

Well. Bad for the taxi driver, or rather, his family. Good for you two. Worth remembering. Will try to bear it in mind. Unfortunately, I’ll have to be respectful from now on, I have the highest regard for mothers. 🙂

  13. Tammy Ho says:

Spot on. I already said that to Fred but apparently his ears are clogged. And indeed, his big interest in English teachers is peculiar.

    Fred:
You shag local girls too, gratis or not doesn’t matter. How do you know they’re not under age? Most of them look too young to even have KTP. Even though they do, it’s illegal anyway, you’re lucky up to date no hansip or pak RT knocks on your door, finds you naked with woman (or women) you’re not legally married to. and parade you to the council office with your only underwear on. So far they only catch local people, but that’s probably because you pay your satpam to get those people away. I don’t think you bring any good to my beloved country. Have you ever done anything constructive rather than visiting jalan Jaksa or Stadium and bitching about the other bules?

Guess everybody is now loosing interest because this discussion has went too far to nothing.

    **Yawn.

  14. Fred Floggle says:

    Nice one Achmed,

you just proved my entire point. When you lose a debate using facts and rational argument, you slip into insults and personal attacks. You did this consistently thought the debate.

If you had provided reasoned argument and facts I might have made concessions. Instead you stuffed it up.

    Lets recall readers, Achmads arguments:

    1. Number of bules makes their actions “bloody unimportant”.
Well, there was only one Hitler. Were his actions unimportant? Is the actions of a peodophile “bloody unimportant”? Shame on you Achmad!!

    2. Next he argued that I should read the papers and see how the problem isn’t mentioned (he rather hoped I didn’t know the lingo)
I pointed out to him, and he later conceded, a) half the bloody news doesn’t get into the papers, b) the papers are crap. He agreed on both points.

    3. He argued Indonesians don’t think about bules.
He is wrong here – as everyone knows. Bules and there actions stick out like bulldogs testicles in Jakarta. Indonesians must be the biggest gossips in the world, and love nothing more that gossiping about bules. He seems to think they chat all day about interest rates and fiscal policies. I think he isn’t living on the same planet.

    4. He then argued that radical Islamists didn’t care about what bules did.
This is the biggest porkie he has told so far, and even other posters shouted him down. To argue that radicals ignore the oafish behavior of bules in their midst beggars belief.

    5. When he lost on these points he started the personal attacks. According to him I have problems with how locals perceive me (I don’t have), I need some education (I don’t), I have self loathing ( I don’t) etc etc etc

Achmed, you can play the man all you like, the game is won with a ball. Insult me if you want, it doesn’t further your argument, but then again you don’t seem to have one left mate.

  15. Fred Floggle says:

    Concerned Teacher says:

Actually, it’s not against the law in Indonesia to have sex outside of marriage. Soeharto is not president anymore. Laws were rewritten back in 2004 so please don’t attach any crimes of passion to me. Jakarta, specifically, is governed by a Governor and there are MANY unmarried couple living together in Jakarta.

    One of you is wrong”¦”¦.

  16. Achmad Sudarsono says:

Ok, Fred, you asked for it.

I can see you sitting there, in your kos, exhausting bintang after bintang until your drunk, but craving more, staggering out, swearing at the nearest taxi driver to take you to the nearest internet cafe. They roll their eyes as you stumble in, add another few bintangs to your tab, and you start on the blogs.

Deep in your heart, you know you’ll never, never leave Jakarta, or even Tangerang. You hate the other Bules who got that conversational job at EF you wanted. You hate them more for sweeping away all those hot 22-year olds you craved after. The only option left was to open a “business,” hoping the departments of tax, immigration, and DKI don’t find out what you’re up to: a pembantu, massage, and mail-order bride business.

At night you lie awake, wondering how you ever got it up for those girls back in high school who never looked at you. Now you wonder why you can’t now. (It’s all those Bintangs, Fred).

It’s another depressing Friday, depressing because yet another Stadium girl left you for better prospects: the latest hire at EF Kebayoran, the same place that rejected you 10 years ago for, “not enough life accomplishments.”

You know it’s all true, Fred. We’ve been too kind to say so.

Aduh Fred, you live in your small own world. Really, none of Indonesian think a lot about bules, most of them are much more interested in celebrities gossips, look at the gossip show on every channel every hour on each TV stations. Unless you’re celebrity, no one really cares.

Usually those who do think and gossip about bules, are those who work for them or with them. Actually take a small percentage from those people and think about Indonesians who hang out or befriend with bules, outside work. See, your pool is getting smaller and smaller.

If there are bules behaving badly, so what, some of Indonesians are too. Why make such a big fuss just because of the skin colour or profession? At the end of the day, I don’t care if my bule or local friend is a CEO or an English teacher, as long as they’re polite and not ‘kurang ajar’, I’d be happy to be their friends.

  18. Fred Floggle says:

    Achmed:
Keep it up mate. It’s the quickest way to lose an argument. Shows you don’t have any real responses”¦”¦.

    Anita:
You start your comments by saying “NONE of Indonesian think a lot about bules”¦”. The second sentence starts “Usually those who DO think and gossip about bules”¦”.

That’s a contradiction Anita. Either none think about them, or some do. You can’t have both.

Come to think about it YOU thought about a bule didn’t you? Thought about one, and married him”¦”¦ Now living in Scotland.

  19. Achmad Sudarsono says:

I revert to my previous statements, Fred.

    * Bules don’t count for much in the Indonesia story: power structure or ordinary life.

    * You don’t know what’s going on. Crap Bahasa Indonesia, don’t know what’s happing in the media, or daily life. No important Indonesians are going to talk to you with your attitudes.

    * Please see above for an account of your Friday.

Over and out for now. I leave it to my fellow countryfolk. Nice chatting.

  20. Fred Floggle says:

Achmad, I assume that is your way of saying: “sorry Fred, you are right there is a problem with these English teachers…… I dont have any counter argument to the ponits you made”.

    Thanks and goodnight.

  21. Anita McKay says:

    Fred:
Pardon my English, it’s not my mother language anyway. I meant some of Indonesians do, but amongst 200 million people, I bet a much larger percentage care more about Peterpan and the divorce drama between Maia and Dani. On top of my head I could only name one single famous bule, Franz Magnis Suseno, who could speak ‘Jawa Halus’ and understood about wayang.

And yes, I’m one of those Indonesians who do work with, work for, hang out and befriend with bules. I’m married to one, as a matter of fact. Therefore I could see that Parvita has some truth on her comments, but not all are like that. I’ve been working in multinational companies, I’ve been reporting to bules, I’ve had many bule clients as part of my jobs, and to be honest, they do know what they’re doing.

I don’t know much about Parvita’s industry (oil&gas?) but in mine, there are no unqualified bules, or just to be fair, I haven’t met one who made me think “how could you sit down on your chair and be in your position while I know more?”. Part of my former job was to prepare the arrival of those expats so I know the fuss behind it, and how difficult to persuade one to come to Indonesia.

Socially, I’ve encountered some a** too, those who treat their wives/girlfriends like s**, those who are obnoxious and behave he owns the world, those who are stupid to be treated by their so-called girlfriends, but as I said, there are Indonesian freaks too. Why is it different just because one has light colour and the other is brown? I have an English teacher friend whom I’d rather sit down and talk to, compare to 60ish y.o Vice President of a big insurance company who likes to grope every girl he meets (and finally is married to 20ish y.o girl who once worked for a golf course in Jakarta. Fred, this also counter proves your theory about English teachers being paedophile. The guy I mentioned is old enough (certainly very smart to reach VP position too) to be her grandpa!). See how much I like gossiping 🙂

We (certainly I and my friends) don’t care about labels. professions, or skin colours. I’ve also met those Indonesians whose face are always in Tattler, and again, some are nice, some are weirdos. It doesn’t matter, Fred. As I said, at the end of the day, as long as you’re polite and not ‘kurang ajar’, I’d be happy to be your friend. But if you’re being rude, obnoxious, pretend that you’re uniquely a God’s gift, I would stay away from you.

  22. Tuan says:

    Tuan,

Manila doesn’t have any foreign English teachers (except in two international private schools). We don’t need foreign English teachers to learn English. We have been, for a long time, taught English by Filipino teachers.

As for the “as compared to Manila and Bangkok” comment. Erm, was there even a need to mention that? What was the point even? Tuan, my Indonesian American Muslim, it’s a given that the sex industry is institutionalized in many parts of South East Asia and the rest of the world. Go to any major city in any country and you’ll find a red light district. Honestly, don’t kid yourself.

    Mabuhay my Malayan bro!

I agree that there is red light district in every country in the world. But some countries flaunt it, and just don’t care reflection of it, Thailand in particular. Last year’s Academy Award winning movie, The Departed (a great movie, btw), had a character made a remark about Thailand being a haven for perverts.

But I applaud you for cutting through the grain. I do acknowledge that there are racial bais in the workplace and I hope you do make a change in the world.

  23. Tuan says:

  24. Aluang Anak Bayang says:

ehh .. rufusOmar, I think the whole thread refers to Bule perverts masquerading as English teachers, not Asian ones. You hardly find Thai, Chinese, Malay or Pinoy shags little girls or boys. It is simply absence in our culture. This illness is prevalent to Bules and Middle Easterns.

  25. Tammy Ho says:

    AA Bayang:
You must have forgotten the story of Robot Gedek a.k.a Siswanto. First, he only preferred boys, second, he only preferred the young ones, all of his victims are in between the age of 9 to 16, third, he sadistically mutilated them, drank their blood, sometimes kept their skin.

    Adnd, oh, he’s Indonesian!

If that’s not an illness, I don’t know what that is. I think the judge and the rest of Indonesia agreed when he was sentenced to death.

  26. Aluang Anak Bayang says:

  27. Fred Floggle says:

But anyhow, I’d like to reiterate that I would be more concerned about a society where women are available for peanuts. That usually means that a fabric of a normal life is torn down completely.

It isn’t peanuts by Indonesian economic standards, only by Western standards. And there hangs my entire case. In the last 20 years we have seen an exponential growth of sex tourism by stealth. We now have a growing problem of western men arriving in Asia purely to have sex with local girls. Some arrive openly as sex tourists, stay fort a week or so and go home. The make no pretentious claims to be helping the local population, and they add to the economy.

Others however arrive with the seat of their pants hanging out, fresh from the unemployment queues of Europe, Australia and the USA. They charge money that locals cannot afford to teach substandard levels of English, and sponge off an impoverished society. As if that were bad enough, they seduce any local girl they can.

    Which raises two points:

    1. Do you people REALY understand how English lessons are viewed by locals? Trust me, they see paying Bule English Teachers in the same light as they pay corrupt police. It’s a necessary expense that they have to go through. They really don’t see the value in it, but it has to be done.

    2. Do you understand the stigma attached to a girl who has had a relationship with a bule? Do you think she has a chance of a good marriage? Trust me, the average narrow minded (and sexually insecure) Indonesian man will not go near a girl who has dated a Westerner. This is true not only in Indonesia, but also in Japan, Korea and China.

From the comments made on this thread I really don’t think so. Time to get to know the local population chaps. Or go home.

  28. taxpayer says:

    Hey Fred…..

Which has had a more adverse affect………..Corruption in Indonesia or the Bule?

Who is truly harming Indonesia? Sure as hell ain’t bules or bule English teachers. Indonesians will be the first to say that the corrupter’s of this country are leading it. I have yet heard a bule’s name mentioned yet.

NOW let’s get on to your comments.

“I also take umbrage at Concerned Teachers comments about me spreading “vile filth”:

I talk about adult English teachers supplying young girls Ecstasy so that they will strip off and dance naked in nightclubs. Isn’t THAT the the vile filth?”

FIRST……is this based on verifiable, first hand information or is this conjecture? In Jakarta, the dealers who control ecstasy are….well…..Indonesians. And they have financial backing from Africa and Australia as well as other regionalized areas of the East.

Therefore…shouldn’t one attack the dealers of the ecstasy and not the English teachers?

And with all due respect…..how do broke, can’t work in their own country, low-life, sexual predator English teachers in Indonesia afford to be Ecstasy dealers who prey on Indonesian women? And… this would be called “DATE RAPE” and the “DATE RAPE” drug so……….if Bule English teachers swarm to Indonesia for the “EASY” sex they NEVER could have at home than why do they need ecstasy to get the POO?

    COMMENT 2:

“Even he mentions and accepts that some bule English teachers act in this manner. He suggest 5%. I believe based upon anecdotal evidence from students, girls and teachers, that its about 50%.”

MAY I SEE YOUR ANECDOTAL EVIDENCE? And if you have this evidence, are you not violating INTERNATIONAL law by not providing it to the proper authorities? Therefore, making you a 3rd party accomplice in these heinous crimes!!!!

    COMMENT 3:

“I talked about a number of bule English teachers being arrested for having sex with children. Isnt THAT the vile filth?”

YOU have talked about 10 teachers and they were spread out over 5 different countries. Total up the population of those countries and we have a small percentage. SO SMALL in fact that it barely registers on the calculator.

WHAT is really interesting here with the “Sex with children” comments is that YOU not once mention the MULTITUDE of married Indonesian girls who are only 12-15 years old SCATTERED throughout every KAMPONG in Indonesia. AND…..their husbands are Indonesians. IS THIS NOT Paedophile behavior?

Furthermore, you have managed to concentrate this WHOLE problem SPECIFICALLY to English teachers which only manifests the problem by allowing other races and cultures to continue DENYING that this is not happening amongst their own people.

THEREFORE, you are allowing this disgusting behavior to continue by spreading propaganda and false information. That makes you equivalent to 70% of the world media.

    COMMENT 4:

“I talked about men who take teaching jobs just to get easy access to vulnerable girls. Isnt THAT the vile filth??”

MOST of your conversations are in regards to men taking easy English jobs in order to molest LITTLE BOYS. And all of your teachers arrested from your own COPY/PASTE’s were teachers molesting LITTLE BOYS.

SOOOOOO…………What is the basis of the above comment? What makes the girls Vulnerable? AND……..Where are the verifiable statics that show a multitude of BULE men taking easy English jobs to gain easy access to vulnerable girls who……..are UNDER THE AGE OF 18 (and thus the act constitutes rape or date rape)?

Fred….I respect your opinions on those English teachers who have been found guilty of a crime. I also respect your hatred towards Pedophiles who secretly prey on our children.

I DO NOT respect your view that this is SOLELY an English teacher issue so it’s not OKAY to generalize, what is a HUGE industry, as being evil and satanistic in nature.

LASTLY……….the psychiatric nature of pedophiles is to establish trust and bond with their victims. This means the victims are lees apt to turn on them and tell an adult. This means that they often go uncharged and unprosecuted for years. This allows them to have free movement to move from country to country because THEY have no criminal record to stop them from doing so. This is why this crime is so difficult to stop before it happens. The root of the problem is located in THE WESTERN COUNTRIES that have not been able to successfully catch them before they migrate on.

It is also a dutiful note that ALL of these Pedophiles have been caught or red-flagged as a result of THOSE SAME western countries issuing warrants for their arrests. The prime example being Interpol.

In addition, the majority of the ones using English teaching as a guise for their crimes have been CAUGHT as a result of OTHER BULE ENGLISH TEACHERS assisting local law enforcement in their captures.

When one chooses to find bad in the world, their level of success is 100% with an attached 100% failure rate in establishing good.

Oh wow Fred. Tell me. I don’t know what stigma and the chance of good marriages you’re talking about. I’ve got 3 aunties who are married to Germans, happily I might add, for more than 20-40 years. I’ve got 2 cousins who are married to Dutch, and it’s been 10-12 years a go. Oh I’ve got another 2 cousins who just got married to Germans recently but perhaps from your sarcasm’s point of view we must wait for another 20 years to prove whether they have the chance of good marriages.

Have you heard the organization called Srikandi (http://www.srikandi.org/)? Do you know who are in the committee? Those are successful women, married to foreigners. I can name 1 example: Amalia Wiryono (the KOI restaurant owner and the shareholder of Rumah Yoga). She’s married to a bule (Italian?) and from what I know, she doesn’t get such stigma you mentioned, as her socialite friends are those whose face are in Tattler almost every time, and her restaurants and other business are just going stronger.

How do you get such a perception about stigma and chance of good interracial marriage, unless probably it’s your own experience and your young girlfriend just left you for a younger, more good looking, more successful guy (an English teacher perhaps?). And if you think (hopefully concern) about the stigma etc., you still shag them anyway and make them are not worthy in front of narrow-minded Indonesian men. So I guess we have to thank you for your contribution to our nation by making it worse.

Ah Fred. Open your eyes. Maybe you should hang out in Burgundy instead and stop going to BATS or Blok M.

  30. Achmad Sudarsono says:

    Folks,
