Nadine Chandrawinata

Jul 18th, 2006, in News, by

The Miss Universe contestant from Indonesia, Nadine Chandrawinata, has strutted about in a bikini, to the displeasure of some.

Nadine Chandra Winata, the reigning Miss Indonesia, who was born in Germany but has some Indonesian parentage, appeared in a bikini at a Miss Universe 2006 photo shoot for their annual calendar, despite the fact that she could have chosen to wear a one-piece swimsuit.

Latifah Iskandar, a parliamentarian from the PAN party was one who let it be known that Indonesian girls should not engage in such activity:

I’m sad that there are still Indonesians like that, at this time wer’e concerned about the issue of pornography. It’s very inappropriate.

The Majelis Ulama Indonesia, MUI, also complained, and went even further, saying that Indonesia should not participate in the contest at all.

The MUI rejects (Miss Universe) primarily because it emphasises beauty and the body. This can be seen in the appearance of the contestants. Secondly, the MUI rejects the clothes they wear.

said one Amidhan of the MUI in Jakarta and he added that a new fatwa was not in the offing because a previous one condemning public indecency and pornography was already sufficient. He advised that a new contest should be set up:

Why not have a contest that doesn’t emphasise beauty but instead ability, intelligence, and spirit as human beings who are moral and religiously observant?

Nadine however was not alone in her choice of the two-piece outfit. Miss Malaysia, Melissa Ann Tan, a girl of Chinese descent, also sported one. Of the 86 finalists who appeared in the swimsuit session only three chose to cover their belly buttons – Misses Serbia, Turks & Caicos and Kazakstan.

Update July 21st

The womens’ wing of the Islamic Defenders Front, the Mujahidah FPI, have reported Nadine Chandrawinata to the police for indecency. FPI lawyer Adnan Assegaf, who accompanied Mujahidah Secretary Noni Supriyanti Budiani, gave the following explanation:

We have reported Nadine Chandrawinata as she has harassed Indonesian women by appearing in vulgar poses at the Miss Universe 2006 contest on behalf of Indonesia.

He added that Nadine’s participation in the event, which is being held in another country, the United States, was against Indonesian culture which, he claims, does not permit women to wear bikinis in public.

Besides Nadine, the FPI, who have been on a recent reporting-to-the-police-spree (see Krisdayanti & Playboy, Playboy the Third, Joanna Alexandra & Fla Priscilla, Andara Early), also reported some people connected with the Miss Indonesia contest and thought to be active supporters of Nadine, namely Mooryati Sudibyo, Wardiman Djojonegoro , Mega Angkasa , Kusuma Dewi and Artika Sari Devi, who the FPI says:

…have supported and financed the departure of Nadine. So they can be charged with engaging and participating in activities forbidden by the law.

The law in question is edict number 02/U/1984 which apparently forbids the holding of beauty contests where they conflict with the moral and religious standards of the people.

Noni Supryanti Budiani explained further:

We didn’t only report Nadine, it’s not fair if we just report her. Don’t allow Nadine to be used anymore.

About 100 Mujahidah loudly demonstrated outside the Jakarta police station where the complaint was filed.

Continued

Nadine says, to Antara, that she is unconcerned about the actions of the FPI back home in Indonesia.

It’s their right if they want to report me to the police. But one thing is for sure – my participation in the Miss Universe contest is to make Indonesia known in the international arena.

She says she is not at all depressed about the matter.

I don’t feel down at all after hearing about it. It just makes me want to advance to the next round even more.

Alas, however, Nadine did not make the cut for the next round of twenty contestants, the news of which caused the dismay and almost visible pain of many in Indonesia, a country where the Miss Universe competition is taken rather seriously indeed and where the performance of the nation’s representative is viewed as a not insignificant matter of national pride.

say what chacha? sorry, I don’t speak tarzan language full of censored materials like you do. have a nice day.

  2. Jayz says:

The entire discussion just proves that Nadine represents most Indonesians in this place as well. The plethora of grammatical errors, letter casing errors, misspelling errors, etc, make my head aches. I think excessive cursing and venom do not do any good to anyone here. So does judgemental attitude and non sequitur arguments.

  3. sonic says:

good point JayZ! The fact we are talking about it already made Indonesia worth talking about! 🙂

  4. muhaha says:

*lol* Nadine harassed Indonesian women by appearing in vulgar poses at the Miss Universe 2006 contest on behalf of Indonesia… fair enough, everyone has different opinion about this issue.

I say next year we send in a banci/transvestite!
😛 Its time to embrace diversity; and I don’t see many Indonesian women are going to feel misrepresented. On the downside, I think the pageant disqualified a transexual contestant in the past. We’re going to need a serious make up artist team, and surgeons. kekekkeke

  5. secret admirer says:

nadine i proud you, but are you don’t know we east people. up to you ok!

  6. Tomaculum says:

I don’t speak english very much, but perfect in german, Indonesian and javanese. Am I brainless?
For me is such Miss competition an affront to the womanship. But, if some one like it, why not?
As I read an article about Nadine being reported to the police because of indecency, I didn’t know either to laugh or to cry.
    Quo vadis Indonesia?
There are many brothers and sisters who cried about their in tsunami wave lost children, there are many poors who don’t know what to eat tomorrow.
Spend them some of your energy and wise words (and maybe some of your dollars?).

  7. Oskar Syahbana says:

Great post here. Although I have to say that most of the comments are just plain stupid without a strong facts/arguments behind it. Come on people, be civilized and roll out a good arguments. Be civilized…

  8. blah blah says:

Plz don’t mix this discussion with religion 🙂

and plz, do not curse indo. The opinion of one particular person or group does not represent the entire nation’s.

If u’re born in indo or from an indo parent (based on birth place), then u should be thankful that there is at least a place that allow u or ur parents to settle (regardless of it’s government, or religious discrimination).

I am Indo-Chinese, and I disagree with a lot of it’s governmental (and certain groups) policies (which only represent tiny percentage of all indo people). But do not mix politics with the rest of it’s people. There are lots of innocent people too.

so plz, don’t loose ur focus and on this disccusion board, the discussion is about NADINE :). It’s neither about any particular believes nor grudges against a country with many diverse ethnicities:)

    ciao

  9. Miss Indo 2007 says:

    *sigh*
these 2 faced people make me really speechless,
frankly speakin,i didnt like nadine at first,
but after all she’s pretty (admit that man!) n u cant judge she’s stupid just bcoz of a li’l mistake while u speak english like this –>are you don’t know we east people?
hahaha..sorry man, didnt mean to insulr ur english, but trust me,nadine’s english is much2 better than most of u! how old is she? 21? WHAT DID U DO WHEN U WERE 21?

  10. Miss Indo 2007 says:

    Go Nadine! beat them!

  11. Ben says:

Look people. wearing a bathing suite is to show people that our country have beautiful woman.so if you think that it is only to provoke sex thoughts then you need to go to mental hospital because you have a disease called sexual perversions or simply called pervert. in Indonesia it is called penyimpangan seksual. because ur brain only think the negative side of it. and that is only you you cannt generalize all Indonesian to be like that. and u surely cant make law based on that (RUU Anti pornoaksi and pornografi)

  12. jeng ayu says:

that’s the “beauty” of diversity in Indo

diverse in opinion, culture, religion, ethnics

by the way what ever u say

I’m proud to be an Indonesian

    😉

  13. Karlira Kanakahuko says:

Nadine is the best. In fact, English language and radical Islam is the same because they are the same imperialist! English is the only imperialist language. not an international language forever! just like Islam in |Indonesia which is spreading imperialism. I hate all people who can understand English! English is an Islam while world/Earth is really the Republic if Indonesia. that’s the fact. The non-Muslim Indonesian people are non-English languages in Earth, including Bahasa Indonesia, which Nadine use for her interview.!

  14. Alia says:

This is why I believe in the seperation of church and state. or mosque and state, whatever. but seriously, there are bigger problems that Indonesia has to deal with. I mean, who the hell cares if she’s wearing a bikini? we let tourists do it all the time; inside this country. She wasn’t commiting a lewd act, she wasn’t engaging in illicit acctivites, and MOST importantly, she wasn’t harming anyone. People seriously need to look at the BIG picture, fix that, then start harping on the little things.

  15. Andrew says:

Well this is new… hatred of people who speak a certain language. As if hatred amongst race & religion weren’t enough.

Karlira, you must have hated yourself as well, since you apparently understand English.

  16. Hans says:

Hello, I just happen to spend about 1,5 hour last night looking at Miss Universe 2006 website. I knew, we have delegate, pretty one for sure, and perhaps very smart too. Though, frankly, we should choose better speaker, LOL, I was so surprised that Nadine does not speak a good English, in fact …. too bad of english for a rep of Indonesia.

I agree though, that I RUU pornografi comes up because a closed minded concerns from very closed-minded people,… I guess, they should look around in Indonesia…. we are diverse and we cannot impose a particular strict law upon everyone! Man… I can’t imagine Indonesia with mono culture, boooooooooooooooring.

I am happy that Nadine represent Indonesia, if she were the chosen Miss Universe this year, she would of make a big difference in Indonesia and the world. She will be our real rep around the world… those MPR and DPR will think differently! The peagentry is just a way for her to reach this goal. Look at what Miss Puerto Rico does today! She is a star, an idol, a representative for her world and the world! I think most of us will be proud of Nadine, if she was one!

However, I am also satisfied that Nadine was eliminated…. she still needs to work a lot more on her intellectual and skills, man… that English skill was pretty bad for a miss universe to have! She could of just speak Bahasa Indonesia! I hope next year Miss Indonesia will show better quality!

  17. Karlira Kanakhuko says:

Rockstar is right, almost all Indonesians in whole Indonesia really cannot understands English, just like Filipinos’ languages from unidentifying planet or languages from UFO (BETA in Indonesian), that’s the fact.

  18. 1ndra says:

Me too, English for me, is my 4th language…and I dont study language in my whole time

  19. Ihaknt says:

    to Hassan

Lastly for those who supports nadine: YOU DON’T ACTUALLY THINK THEY WOULD CHOOSE SOMEONE WHO DIDN’T SPEAK ENGLISH FLUENTLY AS THE MISS UNIVERSE, DO YOU? as the future miss universe 2006 tours the world, she would speak Indonesian and german? gimme a break”¦

man you need to broaden your horizon…you sound dumb…you ARE dumb…
FYI dumb man…there have been many miss universe winners from other countries who used interpreters. there have been Japan, South America (too many to mention…but sh*t the girls are hot!), other parts of Asia….how’s the pageant in burqa? is it good? are they smart? oh i forgot, they’re not even allowed to have any education! you stupid ass!

  20. rizka says:

If you called someone “dumb” then u’re dumb too. So stop saying dumb, etc.

    You’re all like bots…

    “banyak yang brengsek”

  21. uzi says:

Just because she’s wearing a bikini doesn’t mean she’s dumb!

    You dumb.

  22. huh says:

I would prefer nadine to wear nothing at all… *LOL*

  23. Belly says:

    Hasan,

I support on you. Your duty is enough. It’s hard to make someone understand. Then leave it, you can find another place to do “it”.

See you all may God Bless You.

  24. Putri says:

HA HA — whats up with everybody? Measuring someones brain with the ability to speak english? Then what do you guys think about our country? Claim to be a country with people who speaks english fluently but STILL becoming an under developed country? Bingo! What a typical Indonesian! And you oskar — you think your einstein? Huh?
Try to speak in english in front of million of viewers around the world. Oh! And try to put some high heels and make up too, so that you know that it ain’t easy being a girl! Try to repsect others wiil you?

  25. Ramster says:

Of course she’s unable to speak english because she wasn’t even born in an english-spoken country. Do you think all MU contestants were good at it?

Take a look at the one from Italy. She did misspell a word. Well maybe Nadine misspelled too many words hehe but thats ok! She needs all the support she could get right now because she is under a lot pressure [ back home…with the FPI about the bikini and stuff ]

Come on guys when you are facing too many people and being the center of everything, you could get nervous too. I bet you wouldn’t do any better than her if you were under the exact situation as she was.

  26. Sari says:

Indos should ship FPI supporters to the middle east and let them live happily ever after, no more worrying about what other people are wearing, kissing law, or stupid things like that, they are such a waste of skin.

  27. sunny says:

I think its time that Indonesians should throw out the sh*t from their mind that miss universe organisation degrades women. HEY by the way this is 21st century. And now its time that Indonesia should accept some changes. Islamic beliefs have always kept women behind ‘purdah’ and were made to do what men demanded, no freedom. these women are meek sheep drawn by herder (men)
How long will this madness go on ? indonesian women should have all rights to express themselves and good freedom( dont take me in wrong way).
THE ISSUE OF NADINE WEARING A BIKINI IS VERY SENSTIVE, HELLO ! BY THE WAY THE WORLD IS CHANGING AND BIKINIS ARE THE LATEST TREND, SO INDONESIANS SHOULD NOT THINK IN A NEGATIVE WAY. 1 PIECE IS OUT OF FASHION, BUT ! BUT ! BUT ! NADINE HAS DONE A RIGHT THING BY WEARING A BIKINI ATLEAST SHE HAS TRIED TO BE FREE FROM BOORING ISLAMIC BELIEF OF SHOWING IN A BIKINI. HEY SHE HAS SHOWN HOW A WOMEN CAN COME OUT OF PURDAH AND TRY TO BE FASHIONABLE.
PORNOGRAPHY IS DIFFERENT FROM WEARING BIKINI. IN PORNOGRAPHY ONE STRIPS HER ESSENTIALS LIKE BIKINI AND BECOMES TOTALLY NUDE. BUT IN BIKINI A GIRL COVERS HER ESSENTIALS( YOU KNOW IT).
FASHION ! SO INDONESIAN WOMEN SHOULD FOLLOW FASHION AND COME OUT OF DISBELIEFS.
NADINE I AM PROUD OF YOU. YOU WERE SHINING LIKE A STAR AT MISS UNIVERSE 2006. YOU SHOWED ALL THAT AN INDONESIAN CAN COME OUT OF SUCH HINDRANCES OF DISBELIEF.
    KEEP ROCKING GIRL

  28. jeff says:

Poor nadine.. Indonesian should gave her support not mocking!

  29. Snoopy says:

For a country with the highest bird flu case in the world, sex for sale industry in nearly every major cities, and a very corrupt & ineffective government system, it’s a bit rich for their religious leaders to call someone dumb because she is beautiful but can’t speak english fluently.

A pilot flying 300 passengers in a jet have high skills in maths for aeronautical navigation and ability to multitask at same time, amongst other things (except for Adam Air pilots). But how many pilots from a non english speaking background speak english fluently? Does that mean everytime we fly in a plane at 30,000ft in a tube of metal doing something people one century ago say was impossible, we are actually entrusting our life to two low intellect people sitting at the front of the plane? Who’s the dummy then?

Even Americans struggle to speak english properly. Take a chill pill and worry about something more important like global warming and the preservation of polar bears for example.
