Names. How many do Indonesians have?

The Jakarta Post probably started the whole sorry issue of “so and so (or maybe just ‘so’), who like most/many Indonesians goes by only one name, ….”, many others have copied it…..

    @ Lulus Esda:
I think the name changes when they become king… eg. current Yogya Sultan Hamengubuwono X was born “Herjuno Darpito”, but once married became “Kanjeng Gusti Pangeran Haryo (KGPH) Mangkubumi”

    I wished i have a surname though,
most indonesians although they have a surname is quite reluctant to pass them down to their children. Most find their surnames are pretty uncool.
For example, my mum’s surname should be Kartasasmita (my grandfather’s) and my dad’s surname should be Sumpeno (again my grandfather’s). Both my grandfathers’ found that their marga isn’t meaningful.
By the next generation it will almost be impossible to keep these surnames last.

plus it quite gives me some problem living overseas, coz i use the last word of my given name as surname instead and it is different with my brother, my mum, nor my dad. Therefore it is hard to show the immigration, etc. that we all are related.

I found surname also decrease the possible chance of incest perhaps? I really think Indonesian who knows their surname should keep it. Tracking down family members could be easier that way too.
