The first Indonesian version of Playboy magazine came out today. Despite the fact that it does not contain nudity and is not any more raunchy than other established magazines its publication has met with much opposition.
Playboy, first edition cover.
The magazine costs 39,000 rupiah or about $4.50. The cover features the model Andhara Early and inside she is featured in about 5 photos, sexily posed but with the important bits covered. It is mainly article based and features an interview with the celebrated novelist Pramoedya Ananta Toer.
Andhara Early with underpants clearly visible.
Opposition to the magazine has come from predictable quarters. The Islamic Defenders Front were first out of the blocks, saying it’s all about the name:
The first edition might be tame, but it will get more vulgar. Even if it had no pictures of women in it, we would still protest it because of the name.
said FPI spokesman Tubagus Muhamad Sidik, who may or may not have been frothing at the mouth as he spoke.
The Front staged a demonstration outside the offices of Playboy and one member was seen to be stamping on a copy of the offending magazine to show his opposition to what he called “the right hand of America”.
I refuse to read this.
Hidayat Nurwahid, the speaker of the parliament, said that the publication was a kick in the teeth for the people of Indonesia, who were largely opposed to it.
He said that freedom had to be qualified by responsibility towards society and asked the people to reject Playboy firmly but without violence. Hidayat Nurwahid, who is a former leader of the PKS, was another who harped on the name thing.
Just by looking at the name of the magazine the people reject it.
Dumb people then. From the point of view of what is actually inside the magazine, he said, the first edition was a trick and later editions would be full of sex and pornography.
Meanwhile the Minister for Youth and Sport, continuing the stream of thick-as-two-planks commentary, said that Playboy had to be rejected because it had connotations of pornography and nudity.
And in the city of Makassar in south Sulawesi province about 30 morally motivated university students demonstrated against the sale of Playboy in their fair town, saying it was “forbidden”. As is the tradition in this rather rough neck of the woods tires were burned and streets blocked as the students also demanded that the regional government ban the magazine.
I don’t mind playboy magazine published in Indonesia, I think that’s great, get them some educated about some thing they ned to know.
me myself have not see all the edition if the magazine, but I’m sure there are no nude photos, basically is same magazine they have in the US, no nude photos.(personally I like to be one of the models. :)) )
And look at that, I saw some photos, a Muslim girl looking at the playboy magazine, and majority who buy the magazine is Muslim.
And it’s not about Muslim. The people who already have a corrupted mind, of course they will get violent that’s natural for a criminals.
1ndra,
I am a latecomer to this but you should ask yourself what would happen if you accuse those pakistanis are not true Muslims but islam ktp, they would jihad your arse.
WOW. I’m an American. Do you guys have any idea how you sound? How you are perceived by the developed world? It’s pitiful. You say anything is justifiable to further your cause, and yet that same practice is not okay for others? The hypocrisy is startling.
So, if it’s alright to further your goals by any means necessary, what makes you different from your enemy? If it’s acceptable to kill in the name of your god can you fault the superiority of your opponent’s better tactics? It only demonstrates your weakness.
I, in no way, advocate pornography or the disrespect of local customs. But let’s face some facts, there are many locally produced indigenous publications in Jakarta that are far more offensive and vulgar than Playboy, and no one is even mentioning the filth and corruption from within. As you know, your problem is internal, and it is Indonesia that suffers from it’s own corruption, no matter who the devil is – the responsibility still lies with you and your culture.
If outsiders are there, it is because of your own leaders weakness. Until the world can get rid of mythology, superstition, ignorance and arrogance, nothing will ever change. Your country, to many in the civilized world, is stuck in the dark ages- and it’s not that your concerns aren’t valid, they are, it’s as some of you mentioned above- it is your ACTIONS that tell the world where you are ‘at’, developmentally speaking.
There is no other way to illustrate the point without offending Indonesians with this statement: Consider a human and a monkey, similar genetic material, both mammals, with forward looking eyes and incisors on the teeth, and many other similarities. Would anyone consider inviting a monkey into the house to share plumbing and bedding, the kitchen and the bathroom? Of course not! Even though monkeys can be taught to ride bicycles, wear clothing, smoke cigarettes and handle sign language, they are still prone to irrational, animalistic violence and disregard for consequences, because an animal has no concept of the past, future, and present. In that same way, many undeveloped countries can be compared to this analogy.
If the civilized world is the house, and the undeveloped, or third world, is the jungles and forests, how can we continue allow you to defecate and destroy the house? You build nothing, invent nothing, produce nothing and receive all. You refuse to clean up your own ‘backyard’, domesticate it, and grow from within, as Europe has done. You cling to antiquated, expired ideals and concepts that are less than primitive. That is not to say people aren’t entitled to their religious beliefs, opinions and thoughts- they should be.
The problem with less than developed countries is not necessarily about buildings, resources, technology, autonomy or access to such, it is about letting your minds evolve and keep thinking deeper and deeper. People, in general, with darker shades of skin tend to have more of a problem with mental evolution than those with lighter skin. This may not be pleasing, but you all know I’m ‘keeping it real’. This is why you have no infrastructure, and why you continually fail, no matter how much the western man ‘oppresses’ or ‘corrupts’ your people. It also has no bearing on your failure how much money, aid, forgiven debts and gentility you are extended, because you still fail. People think it’s about money, but it’s really about how you handle yourselves. Jews aren’t evil, they simply work hard, save their money and love their children. Once the Muslim world learns to love their children more than they hate Jews will they be elevated to the civilized world.
I’m the one girl of Indonesian moslem. I’m the liberalism moslem, but I always do respect my religion and others religion. I’ve seen good and bad things happened in Indonesian cultures. Unfair if we’ve thought that all of true in our’s side, maybe that’s our’s fault. Not caused by playboy magazine or whatever nude things can be a slip attitude off, but it’s being in your self. Are you will decide to be good or not. Choose one of those on your hand.
Look into your self, see, are you good human or not!
Let’s change our’s mind be real, change our’s self, and do anything you can do for your’s life, your’e religion, and your’e country.
See the reality, refix our attitude.
It´s great news for individual liberties. I was very happy to read that the chief of Playboy Indonesia was acquitted. The fact that criminal proceedings were carried against him was ridiculous. Welcome to the XXI century! It does not have anything to do with religion, that you are Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist, Hindu or animist. LIBERTY and HUMAN RIGHTS are UNIVERSAL, UNALIENABLE granted by natural law. Forget about silly beliefs and read about the age of European enlightenment instead. If you do not like to read the Playboy, simply do not buy it. It is so simple.
Interesting viewpoints. Thank you all for sharing in the discussion.
I do not recall reading the word “humility” anywhere. Does Islam teach anything about the spiritual value and virtue of “humility”? As I vaguely understand it, humility has to rest on a firm foundation of acknowledgment that I am not God, or Allah.
Since I am not Allah, or God, (same spiritual concept or ideal or name, different language) it is not my job to pretend to act as God, or Allah. And, if it is wrong to make pictorial representations of Allah (God), it surely must be much worse, spiritually speaking, to presume to be God (Allah) or to presume that I should allow myself to have dominion or coercive influence over another person, i.e., spiritual being.
To dare attempt to usurp Allah’s (God’s) position as the Supreme spiritual being in the Cosmos Universe is tantamount to acting like a little human devil, a spiritually perverted and spiritually unenlightened human devil. Devils are never content or happy until they die, or learn to be human angels, or prophets and/or spiritual teachers of love for the Divine Supreme (which we lowly, weak, ineffectual humans will never be qualified to supplant).
I am no expert on humility, but I am convinced that I have little or none if I am acting in a coercive or violent manner towards someone else who is quietly minding their own business and who is not posing direct threat to my own safety or property. Aren’t these values shared with all the great religions?

If God (Allah) objected to nudity, why are we born with no clothes? Should we hold Allah (God) responsible for this “sinful” state, or should we investigate the twist in our thinking that allows us to be so critical and arrogant and shaming towards what God(Allah) has created? If a man (or woman, transvestite or any other manifestation of the human sexual spectrum which God-Allah has created) condemns something which, or someone who, was created by God (Allah), is that not virtually synonymous with condemning God (Allah)? Who dares to condemn God or Allah? Maybe an arrogant fool. Wish him luck and mercy.; show and give him mercy; forgive him and ask his forgiveness.
To revere Allah (God) means to revere His creations. It implies that we accordingly show our reverence by conforming our behavior towards creating peace, justice, and tolerance for all who are likewise minded. Those who are not likewise minded can only be persuaded by teaching their spirit with good basic spiritual principles, and exemplary behavior manifesting those principles. Human civilization and society is still evolving from our ancient barbaric roots of jungle-like animals. Do we want to return to that state of low existence when we are so close to heaven?
It is foolish, and spiritually arrogant, to attempt to speak for God (Allah). We can barely speak in a civilized human manner for ourselves: The ability for modern speech, and reading and writing, are all relatively new developments in the history of mankind, a history that exists not only in written texts, but in the artifacts and other archeological manifestations of our ancient existence.
Unless our minds are guided by a benevolent spirit of God(Allah), then we doom ourselves to hell on this earth, instead of the heavenly joy of living a spiritually appropriate life. It is not appropriate to seek violence or exploitation of others, if for no other reason than its negative diminution of our natural-born joy and celebration of Allah’s (God’s) amazing creation. And that is the value and virtue of seeking humility.

Peace Upon U All.
This is the dark age of indenessia with many disaster, corrupter, radicals and burning mags hehehe.
I think this is not the way WE as Muslims should do, there is a way of the solution better than doing extrem protest, it show how bad WE Muslim are to other realigous. For all you know, Islam is not just a Religion but the way of life. But WE Muslim with corrupters, rape, kidnap, torture and anything else like VR said make Islam bad to others religions eye.
Those extremist who burn mags, office and something that you look bad in Arab Country make others like ‘Ihaknt’ hate US, come my Muslim brothers N Sisters, let’s show them how good is Islam, atrract them with our beutiful way of life like what our Prophet teach us.
There is no Islamic Countries that really show the truth of Islam, either Pakistan, Egypt or Arabic, and some of them give the bad image of Islam.
Hmm, for them who want to know the Best of Islam or The Beutiful of Islam, you better ask Angela Collins, a beautiful blonde girl from California, who come from Catholic family, why she convert to Islam, why she atracted to be Muslim.
And the fact is, in USA there’s more than 2000 americans converted to Islam every year.
May Allah bless you and me. Peace upon you all.
