Miss Sandra Angelia

Sandra Angelia Politically aware young lady Sandra Angelia scores a crushing victory for East Java in Miss Indonesia 2008.

Miss Indonesia 2008

At the Jakarta Convention Center on the night of 13th May Sandra Angelia from East Java became Miss Indonesia 2008, chosen by a seven panel jury which included our hyper-nationalist politician friend from Golkar Yudhi Chrisnandi. Sandra was also chosen as Miss Favorit by the SMS voting masses.

Also Ran

Kartika Indah Pelapory from Maluku was Runner Up I while Priscilla Yvonne Supit from North Sulawesi was Runner Up II, but enough about them.

Preacher Man’s Daughter

Sandra is the happy result of a union between Christian pastor Yusak Hadisiswantoro and Asti Tanuseputra. Her grandfather, Abraham Alex Tanuseputra, is the founder of the Bethany “Successful Families” Church.

Eastern Values Girl

Sandra says she is not at all used to wearing skimpy, revealing clothing, and she is very aware that as a preacher’s daughter she has to be careful in this area.

Sandra Angelia

On the vitally important bikini issue (see past Indonesian beauty pageant winners’ problems with this – Nadine Chandrawinata) Sandra was asked by journalists – would she be willing to wear a bikini at Miss World 2008 in the Ukraine? Sandra says

I have to wear a swimsuit in the competition, that’s no problem. But if it can be negotiated I will stick to eastern values, that is I will wear a one-piece swimsuit.

Smart

Sandra is an educated girl and after fleeing Indonesia at the age of 13 in the wake of the May 1998 riots she eventually studied architecture at the University of Western Australia in Perth. This may or may not have helped her face the final key question put by the judges, this being

Indonesia is a country rich in natural wealth but so many of its people are very poor and it is a largely agrarian economy. Which economic sector would you prioritise if you were leader?

Sandra took the crowd by surprise, and won the admiration of the judges, by going off on a tangent that the most important thing was to ensure that the law was upheld and applied properly in Indonesia, and that other things would follow from this.

Triumphant moment.

Interesting summary of what has been a very long “to and fro” over the idea of free will.

Everyone who gives critics to Sandra Angelia because of her origin/race, should go to elementary school again to learn about “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika”. It doesn’t matter where the person’s origin is, what her skin color/religion/race is, as far as she is an Indonesian citizen, she has the right to be Miss Indonesia. When Nadine was chosen as Miss Indonesia, why were there no critics about her origin? Obviously, Nadine has western blood, but she is 100% Indonesian.

    Dear All,

    I believe of one thing…..
people can express what they feel freely. And by that we have to give respect for what ever they want to express.
I know that Mr. Muhammad Habin had said something about Miss World based on what ever he thinks. Dont blame him and never judge what ever he said. Let him express what ever he needs to express. That is the best way how to counter his opinion.
I saw a lot of comments replying what mr. Muhammad Habib opinion. And most of the counter reply were full of angers, so what is the different between you guys ( who gave angers counter opinions) with Mr. Muhammad Habib? If you guys think that you want to bring peace and love, just let him be with his opinion.
One thing we should know about this life ” everyone has his/her own reason with the way he/she reacts “.
By giving more comment to his statement, it will lead us into serious problems. Why? it is simple, ” It will create more self proudness from one ethnic or religion because of the solidarity feeling. To fight back or to counter back. So what will the result? There will be more boundry between those religions or ethnics. We will create GAP for each other again. And we dont want it, do we?
What we need to do just accept the fact?
    1. Sandra is the Miss World Indonesia
    2. There are people that have their own belief which may not the same way like us. And please let it be.

    Joey

  24. Hardolin says:

It’s interesting to notice this sentence from the news above : Sandra took the crowd by surprise, and won the admiration of the judges, by going off on a tangent that the most important thing was to ensure that the law was upheld and applied properly in Indonesia, and that other things would follow from this.

Her parent is Yusak Hadisiswantoro, a full time “pastor” in a third world country where there are millions of people live under poverty line.
Sandra spent about 9 years in Australia as an overseas student (1998-2007), the coast of study in Australia is about A$20.000 annually, the cost of living is about the same, so in total she spent about A$40.000 a year.

The average exchange rate of Indonesian Rupiah against Australian dollar when she was a student was $1= Rp 7000, so the average amount she spent was $40.000 x Rp 7000 = Rp 280 juta per year.

With that kind of amount of money it is clear that her father is a multi milioner. One would wonder how much money does the father earn as a “pastor” ?
Obviously he earn tons of money, does he declare his income and pay tax according to the law?
How can a pastor from a third world country with so many poor people can afford to spend so much money?
Where does the source of income come from?

Sandra said that if everyone obey the law the country will be prosper. One would say that the people who must first uphold the law is the Pastor himself.

Bethany is notorious for being labeled as a bunch of greedy gang who masquerading under church name.

  25. Lucky says:

    umm..
Mr.Harlodi,i know you maybe think at that way..
but i think Bethanya didnt have “gang” thing..
it just happen because of blessings..
better be careful with the way you talk sir…
u can be go the big big problem…

  26. Rob says:

    Hardolin…

Maybe the Indonesian tax office should audit all families of all people who are students overseas just to be sure that all that expense is justifiable based on income earned or whether a proper and full scholarship has been provided.

If being a Bethany pastor is a high-paying job and it allows you to send your kids overseas to get an education, then perhaps Hardolin you should consider becoming a Bethany pastor!

I think you might be trying to be serious in your questions here but all the same does Sandra or her father have to justify their income to you? Do they have to prove to you that they pay taxes according to the law? Do they have to justify to you that they can afford it? The father of the winner is not holding publicly elected or appointed office so his finances are his own business are they not?

    Final point:

Bethany is notorious for being labeled as a bunch of greedy gang who masquerading under church name

As are people like yourself notoriously labeled as racist, bigots, halfwits, and troublemakers…such is the world we live in!

  27. Hardolin says:

    Rob,
Indonesia is rich with natural resources but the country is under category of third world as majority of people live under poverty line, but lots of high ranking government official and certain numbers of “pastors” live lavishly.

One would argue that this unjust condition happen as a result of corrupt mentality of government officials and the so called “pastors”. To create a prosperous society in the country It is very important that wealth distribution must be fair.
Lots of church do not care about helping people anymore, they only care about how much money they can collect in the church as holly spirit only dwell in the church that can generate more money.

One of the main tasks the pastor must do is to make sure that the fairness of wealth distribution is done properly, there are millions of Indonesian people live under humiliating condition but on the other hand these so called pastors live lavishly without feeling guilty, they even call it as “blessing” from God. They even so proud of it and show their wealth without hesitation.

They have forgotten that church receive money from the congregation who give to the church because they believe that they have given it to GOD. I believe no one would give money to church knowing that the big part of the money would be used to support the pastor’s lavish live style.

Everyone who knew Sandra when she was an overseas student in Perth know that she drove a Mercedes benz C 2006. Obviously she did not feel guilty about it, well… it’s God’s ā€œblessingā€. Obviously she did not care about so many poor people in her own country who live under poverty line. Oh.. she did not even care where the money come from.

The country is heading toward certain destruction, Indonesia is facing a chronic moral crisis even pastors are corrupt, do not know what is right or wrong.
The exchange rate when Sandra was an overseas student in Perth was about Rp 7000 per $1, now It’s about Rp 9000 per $1. Obviously living standard in the country is deteriorating.

Sandra and her family is part of the problem in Indonesia. Church must distribute their wealth fairly to the needy, that’s the purpose of giving tithe to church (give 10% of earnings).

It’s interesting to see what Bethany people think : ā€œIf being a Bethany pastor is a high-paying job and it allows you to send your kids overseas to get an education, then perhaps Hardolin you should consider becoming a Bethany pastor!ā€

Obviously this person think that to be a pastor is about job that can earn you big money, yes. It is a bout getting big money! Becoming a pastor is not about heart, not about helping poor people and give some comfort to them, It’s the job the same as a self motivation speaker who teach you how to be successful in anything.

The different is, the self motivation speaker charge you about $100 but ā€œpastorā€ charge you 10% of your income! Yes that’s big different!

Another thing, ā€œpastorā€ will tell you that the money he receive will be given to God, infact they use it for their family’s lavish life style.

This kind of corrupt mentality is so rampant in Indonesia, it will bring down the whole country into more chaotic.
One can only hope that Indonesian will not support this kind of behaviour. Don’t give tithe or any money to this kind of church. God has given you brain and mind, do not let your self being cheated.

Sandra’s father (Yusak Hadisiswantoro) is an Indonesian pastor who live in Indonesia under Bethany banner and earn his living in Indonesian currency.
He has been able to spend A$80.000 per year to support his two children in Australia for a period about 9 years.

Again, the same question : How could a pastor from a third world country able to spend such an astronomical amount of money just to support his children to study?
It is astronomical amount of money compare to Indonesian living standard, did Sandra study theology? No! apparently she was not interested in any aspect of church organization or humanitarian at all.

No wonder Bethany church is notoriously known as a gang of greedy money grabbers who operate under church name.

  28. Rob says:

    Hardolin…

It is not the Pastor’s job to ensure the equal distribution of wealth, it is the government’s! I agreed with you regarding taxation and the need for a better mechanism for collection. If this Pastor is abusing the system then it is the government’s job ot audit him and make him account for the wealth and then determine whether he has paid tax on it as he should have done. If he has complied with the law then so be it. Game over!

Perhaps churches care more about money than God. Welcome to the world of tele-evangelism and mega-churches. Big bucks get you closer to the front pews and perhaps closer to God. Is this mentality wrong? Not for me to say! Do I find it strange that people think they can buy their way into heaven and God’s good graces, yes!

What about tele-clerics like AA Gym? Would he be someone you would be able to classify in the same category as Bethany Pastors. I do not know the fella. Maybe he has an income aside from what he earns in the service of the Church, maybe he inherited his wealth. I do not know and I do not really care. Maybe he is just a rich bloke with plenty of cash. This seems to be a case of people being jealous of the wealth and then trying to attribute the wealth to illicit sources.

Supply and demand…if people are willing to pay huge sums for his motivational pastoring then so be it. That is up to the person paying, isn’t it? As I said there is nothing stopping you from becoming a Bethany pastor and pursing the income and then giving it all away to the needy!

  29. Hardolin says:

    Rob,
It is true that the government has responsibility in securing prosperity of the people, but Indonesian government has failed to do the job. The world knows that corruption in Indonesia is one of the worst in the world, the role of pastors in restoring moral value is very important, but the fact is very disappointing. Many pastors (especially Bethany) are morally corrupt.

If the government fail to function it is part of Pastor’s job to stand out and show good example of moral value.

It is wrong to say that it’s not the pastor’s job to ensure fair distribution of wealth. Giving tithe which was recorded in the Bible (Deutoronomy 14 : 22-29) is a very clear example of the act of fair distribution of wealth. The tithe was not used to build worship place or any other purposes but specifically being used to be distributed fairly to the needy.

Bethany has lots of congregation as a result of clever marketing and strategy, it has successfully convinced the vulnerable that God will give them prosperous life if they give 10% of their income to the church, because giving to the church is identical as giving to God.
Well…the result is extraordinary, as lots of people in Indonesia are very materialistic and eager to be rich quickly, the church reaps tons of money.

It is morally wrong to use the money to support the pastor’s family lavish life style because the concept of tithe was not intended for that.

I am sure that Sandra was well aware about homeless and hungry people in her country, but she apparently chose to ignore it, well… the poor people are the cursed ones, the blessed ones always live abundantly. In other word: it’s not my problem, it’s theirs!

I am not familiar with AA gym that you mentioned, if he is a bad person why took a bad one? There are lots of good people and not Christian too.
Perhaps people such as Bill Gate and Warren Buffett are among the good ones. Gate has contributed Billion of dollars (yes with B) to his charity, Buffett even more spectacular with $37 Billion to charity (that’s 85% of his wealth).
Those who are not so religious have such a heart to give away so much money to the needy, but ironically this so called ā€œpastorā€ is always hungry and never got enough to get as much money as possible for their own comfort.

I am not talking about jealousy here, I am talking about what is right what is wrong.
It is clearly wrong for a pastor from a third world country with millions of poor, spend incredible amount of money just for supporting his children education.

ā€œPastorā€ Yusak Hadisiswantoro has spent around $80.000 per year to support his two children to study in Australia, Sandra did not study theology, and apparently she is not that interested in this field.
That amount is equal about Rp 560 juta when the exchange rate was still around Rp 7000 per $1, and he did it for about 9 years.
With that amount of money he could’ve helped more than one thousand poor people in his own country.
Considering that he receives easy money from his ā€œSheepsā€ it is not hard to distribute it fairly to the needy if he wants to.

It is a big lie if you tell people that they must pay 10% of their income to God but in fact you use it to support your high flying life style, it is morally wrong and deceiving.

If you are the pastor and want to use certain percentage of the tithe you must declare it to the whole congregation so they know that the tithe that they have given were not 100% to be distributed to the needy (as commanded in the Bible), but rather to be used to support his family to study overseas. If you can do that then no one feel deceived!

I become a pastor? No no, I don’t have energy to do it, and if the motivation is money that’s totally wrong!
But I notice that condition in Indonesia is very bad nowadays, the moral standard is getting worse, the society is getting more materialistic, and the so called ā€œpastorsā€ are not immune to this degrading moral value.
There are many younger generations who are interested in becoming pastor rather than finding a real job and contribute to build the country, they are more interested in easy money and even they can earn much more money as a pastor rather than joining the work force.

Bethany is notorious as a bunch of money grabber who preys relentlessly to the vulnerable, and sadly Sandra is one of the founder family members.

  30. Tonu says:

Good Luck Sandra, may God Bless You and your mission to tell the world about Indonesia.
I live in Canada. There are so many families move and live here after May tragedy. But there is no native Indonesian nor Chinese Indonesian in Canada. What I see is Indonesians who live in Canada, and when we celebrate our independence day we celebrate it on August 17. We were very proud and exited when our Miss Indonesia went to top 15 three years ago. But this year she’s gonna win.
