Learning Islam

Aug 7th, 2007, in News, by

Indonesian Muslims still have some way to go in learning Islam.

The minister of religion, Maftuh Basyuni said on 4th August that Islam did not teach violence or radicalism, and radicalism could not be allowed to flourish Indonesia because most people were opposed to it and it had no basis in the Quran. He advised people to not only read the Quran a lot but to learn it and understand it.

Maftuh Basyuni
Maftuh Basyuni, jealous obsession.

Muslims must also give room for people of other religions, he said, because in the Quran it was written: “for you your religion, for me my religion”.

He was speaking in Ciawi, West Java, after laying the foundation stone for a printing press building that will be the first centre of Quran printing production in Indonesia, costing 26 billion rupiah to build and expected to produce about one million copies by the end of 2007.

My obsession is that within two years it will be printing five million copies a year.

He admitted to being jealous that Indonesia was the biggest centre of Bible production in south-east Asia, and hoped that the press could produce cheap, pocked-sized Qurans so that people could learn Islam anywhere. antara

Meanwhile in Jakarta former president Megawati Soekarnoputri, not ordinarily known as an authority on religion, spoke on a similar theme after appointing the first office-bearers of the PDI-P’s new Muslim political wing Baitul Muslimin Indonesia (Bamusi, BMI).

Megawati Soekarnoputri
Megawati Soekarnoputri, there’s more to life than shopping.

She said it was peculiar now that Indonesia had entered an era of democracy and respect of human rights that some people went about committing violence in the name of Islam. The founding fathers in 1945 knew that sectarian conflicts were dangerous because they weakened the country and allowed colonialists a foot in the door. The violence that had occurred in Central Sulawesi, the Moluccas, and West Kalimantan should serve as motivation for Indonesian Muslims to learn what Islam was really about, she said. mediaindo

A hard fact for you to swallow. A Bule Muslim will never be accepted as equal to an Arab or Asian Muslim. Bule Muslims however sincere they are, will always be treated with suspicion. History of colonialization is one big factor. Your Zionist-like agenda of pitching Muslims against Christian in Sulawesi citing global ‘jihad’ justice does you no favour with Indonesian security forces and our government. For any of Asian Muslims to take you seriously, you need to have ‘past’ qualifications like beheading Christian Britons or bombing of churches. Have you any of these qualification? Otherwise stop pretending to be a concerned Islamist.

  2. Janma says:

    Sputjam said;

Perhaps, these people have ignored God’s messages, became pagan worshippers and consume their time worshipping and doing worthless rituals, rather than focusing on using their God given common sense to eliminate their sufferings.

Reminds me of the story of a drowning man…. he was floundering in the sea, praying to God to save him. After awhile a boat came along and they wanted to pick him up… “No!” He shouted, “God will help me!”
The boat left him there and passed on. He continued to flounder…. three more boats passed that way and the same thing happened, the man refused to get in the boats, saying God would save him.
Finally, out of frustration or comic relief God appeared before him. “Save me God!” the nearly drowned man shouted… “i’ve been waiting for You! I didn’t get on any other boat, knowing they were false boats”.
“FOOL!” God shouted at him “Who the hell do you think sent those boats!”

After struggling through almost 350 posts in this thread I have one question for you.
I understood that you are a Westerner who had a Catholic, although non-practising, upbringing and that you converted to Islam when you were an adult. What I would like to know as an outsider, neither Christian nor Muslim, is: what made you jump to the other side? I don’t need theological explanations or farfetched socio- political humbug. Just the basic fact or facts. Cause I believe something must have pushed you.
Thank you in advance for your honesty.

Bule-convert Islamist are hard to come by these days, please practise restrain. I sincerely apologize to Pak Dawud Farquhar in advance; afterall we are all part of the 1.3 billion strong Muslim brothers, only difference in interpretations. We shared the same dream, a single theocratic government for the whole world.

    @ dewaratugedeanom

What I would like to know as an outsider, neither Christian nor Muslim, is: what made you jump to the other side?

Ying and Yang symbolises the two-faces of Islam – the warring and peaceful factions (Muslim brother Cukurangan can explain more). Mas dewa, you are not an outsider, you are one of us but with hint of Taoism. We shared the same New World Order domination.

  6. dewaratugedeanom says:

The Bules will have to get stuffed with their human rights’ garbage for now.

I agree. Bules sometimes seem to indulge wallowing in guilt feelings rather than defend themselves. They will rather shoot their own foot instead of eliminating their attackers. I guess it has something to do with ‘turning the other cheek”¦’
Maybe they also like to defile their own nests.

  7. Aluang Anak Bayang says:

    @ dewaratugedeanom

… Maybe they also like to defile their own nests.

That is why so many Bule-convert like you turn to Islam. Now we share the same universal dream. Dawud Farquhar has yet to prove that he is qualify to be among us. He needs to at least burn a church or kill a non-muslim, to join our elite club.

    >> One do not have to be an English literatus to conclude your evil intent.

Intent? So now you think you are God and can judge the intentions of others? LOL, you are so woefully pathetic. It would be better not to say anything at all than to respond for the sake of responding and thereby making a bigger fool of yourself than you have already shown to be. There is nothing in that statement that sanctions fighting or killing anyone; you really need to know when to give up when you can’t make your nonesense stick.

There is a beautiful ayah which I hold close in my heart at all times. Is is this ayah that clearly distinguishes the stupidity of extremists like AQ and their numbers amongst the non-Muslims:

“O YOU WHO BELIEVE, STAND OUT FIRMLY FOR ALLAH, AS WITNESSES TO FAIR DEALING, AND LET NOT THE HATRED OF OTHERS AGAINST YOU MAKE YOU SWERVE TO WRONG AND DEPART FROM JUSTICE. BE JUST! THAT IS NEXT TO PIETY…” [Trans of 5:8]

Just because you fail to understand my posts or just because you sink to childish finger-pointing does not mean that I should ‘serve to wrong and depart from justice’. It is only when you and your henchmen here digress to insulting Islam and its Prophet that all bets are off and blatant logic has to be brought to this board.

    >> … pitching Muslims against Christian in Sulawesi citing global ‘jihad’ justice

See above. Instead of lying and putting words in my mouth, you’d be better off spending your free time (and it looks like you have plenty of it) into reading and increasing your knowledge in those things that will benefit you in this life and the next. Anyone impartial reader on this board will see you for the conniver that you are.

    >> Getting our house in order is their first priority

Absolutely, and this can’t happen without an Islamically dimensioned education revolution. It is not enough to copy the successes of other nations without addressing the requirements of how they will be achieved. Indonesia is unique in almost every way from other nations, it needs to identify its weaknesses and build upon its strengths. It needs to embrace globalisation with all its rewards and imperils yet does not put itself out at the mercy of unscrupulous orgaisations like the IMF etc. It need to endearto those that are closest to it in terms of language and culture and history and build a solid coalition that is built upon mutual interest. The recent debacle of signing ‘that’ treaty is not a good example of this; glad to see that they withdrew after they realised its harms.

Jakarta needs to take full advantage of the manpower and the natural resources available to it, but the key is to have the most competent people in positions of authority. Like most emerging Asian economies, nepotism is rife, but this need not be a problem so long as the people are competent. Taking S’pores example, where nepotism is common, yet they pay top dollars for the most competent people. They do not tolerate incompetence or faliures and so shouldn’t Indonesia.

    >> afterall we are all part of the 1.3 billion strong Muslim brothers.

Far from it, there is nothing in your words here that would identify you as a Muslim. You can wish all you like, but until you accept Islam fully and stop justifying your cultish ideas, you can’t fool anyone here. I don’t need to re-post the earlier links, so make yourself useful and start learning.

    >> wud Farquhar has yet to prove that he is qualify to be among us

You give too much credit to yourselves, lol. Perhaps you should look at your academic and life achievements and ask yourself what YOU have done for those around you and how you have made your country better.

My work and travel beckons so I’ll see you around when I get time.

    Adios.

    Cheers!

    >> You come into this forum and starting shooting your mouth off.

‘shooting my mouth off’? If you go back to my very first post, you will see how hollow your words are. In fact, it was funny how you tried to twist my words and forced them to support your own views. This was when I realised how sneaky and conniving you were, so we could not let that go to rest. There is an ettiquette with disagreeing and a sense of responsibility when substantiating points, none of which you are particularly good at.

    >> After 250 plus posts you answered a question.

I don’t normally entertain personal questions on public forums, but since you continued to sulk like a baby, I thought it was a small price to pay for putting your time-wasting antics to an end. Clearly nothings changed.

    >> Now you complained that my reading was not good enough.

I think we all know the level of your academia, so its not your fault if you lack comprehension. Your selective and out-of-context meanderings were exemplerary :^)

    >> But you never answered anyone’s else questions.

That depends on what your agenda is. Within my posts, I have answered (and also pointed to links that contain the answers from works that I myself have also produced) and I dont’ care much for fear or favour. The fact is that none of the answers are ‘good enough’ for you because your agenda will not allow you to open your mind to the answers. You are neither the jury or the judge, hence I leave the findings to the discretion of the discerning reader.

Funny how you expect answers from others but fail miserably to respond in kind. It is a reflection of your surroundings that mould and impact your understanding. When you have the sincerity to learn and ‘think’, maybe you will then begin to offer something practically useful to others.

    >> Why is there poverty prevalent in sudan and somalia?

Corruption amongst the leadership. Lack of opportunities. Influence from outside forces. The concept of ‘nation-state’ is quite new and most of the political entities that we see on today’s world map were forged in the last 200 years. Muslim ‘ummah’ denigerated when nationalism, partisanship and blind patriotism found fertile ground in the divide-and-rule colonialism of the West that continues to poison the development (both intelletucally and materially).

    >> …why you were beaten

LOL, It is so funny when you are vainly speaking of your own ‘successes’ and machoism to what has become an absent and hollow forum :^) Try beating an egg, you might actually be able to do it.

I thought returning here after a month I would find some real substance to deal with, but as usual I’m disappointed that you’re the usual bone-idled failure which you were sussed out to be at the beginning.

  16. Aluang Anak Bayang says:

    @ dawud farquhar

A newly convert white boy teaching me Islam? I am at least a 12th generation from the first Wali. A White boy like you can only be our pin-up Muslim boy, not spread the message. 🙂

Care to tell us what makes you join Islam? Many of our forumers are expats, maybe you can convert one or two.

  17. dawud farquhar says:

    Aluang Kejaweni writes:

    >> A newly convert white boy teaching me Islam?

Glad to see that your sense of humour has not rotted away like the rest of your intellectual senses. 14 years is a very long time in learning, practising and preaching a faith. You clearly would not know that since you had the misfortunate of being born into a willy nilly dithering Muslim household, who could not even teach you what Islam is and hence your right and wrongs are grossly confused to say the least.

Anyway, I have not returned here to entertain your ignorance and stupidy any further. The party has long come to an end here and my work and travel beckons me further. It has been an interesting few weeks and no doubt what I’ve seen here is a typical microcosm of the general ignorance and lack of knowledge that prevails amongst non-Muslim but also amongst those who claim to be Muslims. It is not only a personal duty of Muslims but also a collective responsibility to make sure that established and sound knowledge is easily made available whenever Islamophobia rears its tentacles.

On the acceptance of the Message, the Messenger was not allowed to force people to accept Islam as the message has to be accepted by one’s own free will and own initiative, as the following ayah points out:

“And say (O Muhammad); The truth is from your Sustainer, so let him WHO WILLS, believe, and let him WHO WILLS disbelieve..” [trans of Quran 18:29]

“And if your Sustainer had pleased, surely all those who are in the earth would have believed.” [trans of Quran 10:99]

If one accepts Islam, then it is for thier own benefit and if he goes against it, then the consequences will again be upon one’s own self. The person delivering the message of God is not a custodian over the people after they err:

“…so whoever follows the right way, it is for his own soul and whoever errs, he errs only to its detriment; and you are not a custodian over them.” [trans of 39:41]

Our struggle is a continuous struggle aimed at subduing one’s baser nature and attuning oneself to Allah’s moral standards. It is the basis for personal moral development, creating pious and philanthropic activism, promoting justice and prosperity in society, while combating ignorance, injustice and oppression. As a result of this greater jihad, the ulema of Islam remark “…it heals those societies which follows its guidance and are built on consciences which have been awakened and hearts which have been illuminated by the light of belief.”

I am leaving for Singapore next week and will be in Jakarta (via Medan and Bogor) by the end of March so won’t have time to return to this board.

You can shout as loud and as long as you like here now and I’m sure your echoes will keep you company. Just make sure you switch the light off and close the door after you’re done :^)

You admitted you calculatively avoided my questions because I am not ‘Muslim’ enough to be answered. I say you have no answer to the most basic of my questions. Here is a list of links to prove Islam promotes dialogue.

I wondered if you ever had answered anything at all. So it is not ‘Muslim’ enough to ask you ‘what made you convert?’. How silly. I have written on another posting what makes White boy like you convert – it is the halal sex with young boys and girls. Answering my question would have exposed your pedo intent, and you craftily avoided that; but you ain’t fooling no one. You have to understand that Muhamed was against any form of pagan rituals/worship. So how come muslims today perform this ritual with zest, circumveting and kissing the black stone, throwing smaller stones at larger stones in the form of ilbis(satan). Aren’t these pagan rituals?
Wake up and observe God and His creations.
There is no need for religion if you believe in God.

    Dawud Farquhar (not verified) “” Fri, 03/28/2008 – 5:23pm

It is this kind of blatant ignorance and total lack of Islamic learning and knowledge that these so-called ‘Muslim moderates’ would like to re-interpret Islamic history and texts! Homosexuality is one of the greatest crimes in Islam and is punishable by death or banishment from the land. Islam is not one person’s wishful thinking or personal desire, it is based of solid foundations that are dictated by the Qur’an and the Sunnah. This phenomenon of attempting to make ‘accepting’ homosexuality in Indonesia is a modern ploy by those with a sickness in their hearts and a desire to immoralise society. Looks like these so-called moderates have forgotten the punishment that was meted to them via the Tsunami in 2004…

Funny to see temperamental dialog between Dawud (indonesia) and Aluang (Malaysia) both of them believe in islam religion which confirm among of muslim always fighting with each other. Dawud is a fanatic type of person that will hold anything for faith and sunnah and Quran is a must. But Aluang is giving more room to the local tradition and incline that Kejawen and Islam could be integrated in mutualism .

Dawud and Aluang is the victim of Arab tradition which never change from before Muhammad and after Muhammad. So the winner is clearly the arabs even Muhammad himself is defeated by telling people that he is an arab so you must follow the arab way and visit my country. But I think The first winner is the Jew because so called arab tradition follow Judaism.

Musa never set Jew religion and Jesus never set Christianity religion and so for the sake of common sense Muhammad never set Islam religion.

I invite these 3 religion believer to answer my question why do you worship the walling wall, the kabah and the cross ? Can’t you understand that the 3 of you is the same ? You have been setup The God with symbol. How dare you make symbol for The God. infact all religion are the same and the enemy of all and only stupid would buy it.

Islam is from salam mean peace, Yahudi is from Huda mean knowledge and Nasrani is from nashoro mean support. The 3 meaningful word had been turn into meaningless value and become tools for the benefits of their elite.

Why can you speak Peace, Knowledge and support without saying from which religion you are ? If you do this then victory for all humanity and that is The God way.

“As a reference to (this post), please read the article titled What is the Koran?.

    An excerpt.
Increasingly diverse interpretations of the Koran and Islamic history will inevitably be proposed in the coming decades, as traditional cultural distinctions between East, West, North, and South continue to dissolve, as the population of the Muslim world continues to grow, as early historical sources continue to be scrutinized, and as feminism meets the Koran. With the diversity of interpretations will surely come increased fractiousness, perhaps intensified by the fact that Islam now exists in such a great variety of social and intellectual settings””Bosnia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, the United States, and so on. More than ever before, anybody wishing to understand global affairs will need to understand Islamic civilization, in all its permutations. Surely the best way to start is with the study of the Koran””which promises in the years ahead to be at least as contentious, fascinating, and important as the study of the Bible has been in this century.

I am not really in the position to answer any responses though, so.. okay, semoga bermanfaat.

A very typical characteristic of our corrupt Javanese elites. We must ignore such people, because they will only gradually decrease our IQ if we stoop to their low levels.

And I agree to Dawud Faquhar’s assessment, you’re not a Muslim, Aluang. It seems you have lost your faith in Islam a very long time ago. Now you’re an Islam-hater at heart who likes to spew nonsenses and sarcasms towards your former religion.

And Aluang, Kejawen is not a part of Islam. It’s a form of syncretism with stronger roots to paganism and animism, rather than to Islam.

PS. After you die, would you look back and reminisce how you spent your life? I wonder why a devout pagan/animist like you would want to spend a lot of his life uttering nonsense and blaspheming his former religion? I mean, what for? Would insulting other religion(s) give you more spiritual enlightenment in your current religion? Would those sarcasms you spew bring you closer to your gods/goddesses/spirits’ favor? In short: DO YOU HAVE A LIFE AT ALL??? If not, then get one, because life’s short! 😉
