Haha…Thanks Lairedon.. They are good for a chuckle and scary to think they have positions of responsibility.
Patrick… oh never mind 🙂
Caterpillars Are a ‘Warning From God,’ House Speaker Says
They are a warning from God to stop cutting down trees and destroying nature. These bloody caterpillars have to eat too and with less and less greenery it’s clear they are becoming more obvious.
Indonesia, please grow up.
Patrick,
Bravo. at least you’re not telling others to shut up. Quite an improvement from your latest effort in the thread in which you have become the resident poster. A slight recovery from that breakdown, I guess?
ET,
With all his powers he could easily strike out all those responsible for illegal logging and for destroying nature in general in order to protect Indonesia’s precious wildlife. With sending caterpillars a lot of innocent people will be affected too.
But that’s how big daddy always works, in a cruel and unjust way.
A “juicy” story appeared in Dutch media and now also in Indonesia:
Netherlands Fires Diplomat in Jakarta Involved in Sexual Abuse Case
What happened to RRA, the beacon of hope for all minorities in Indonesia?
He appears to have been sabotaged.

Whatever you think of his views and attitudes it’s an unfortunate and unfair thing to have happened, and not the way to deal with blogs you find abhorrent (and it will, of course, only be grist to his mill in the long run).
Sorry for your troubles, Rossy…
I don’t find his blog abhorrent….
His last post was a complaint as to why the top blogs list here hadn’t been updated in a while, which ended
No explanation, no excuse…you’d think basic common courtesy was extinct
To attack the person who provides you with a great free service, and in fact pays your way, is staggering. I was expecting some sort of apology or at least acknowledgement that he had made a small, hopefully inebriated, error of judgement, and then we could sort things out amicably, but nothing… The internet is a big old place, I’m sure he will reemerge, good luck to him.
My only complaint was I was banned from commenting which was a tad frustrating considering the wealth of material for some choice sarcasm and hardly noble if I was to be his demon of choice for the day. Oh and he gets to avoid the time n place invitation.
On the plus side, when it reappears, I should have a couple days before the auto bans kicks in. I guess I shall have to rely on the BO thread for the daily snort now 🙂
Oh course the real question remains what is our real left wing intellectual Timdog doing at a blog called the gates of Vienna? Some sort of Tet offensive going down…..:-)
Oh gituuuuu….
In my ignorance of matters internet I hadn’t realised that he was still hosted by IM.
You can still see the last post on the google cache. Fairly ill-advised in the circumstances, yes.
And over something so banal. Why exactly are people so obsessed about “blog rankings”, “traffic” and “hits”? Ooooh! Four people read my post on my dog’s latest health problems! My life now has meaning!
I actually only discovered that you could view “stats” a couple of months ago (my ignorance of matters internet, again). No gratification, but a certain amount of startled revelation. Suffice to say, if you want to generate “traffic” without doing anything, just post something about a certain street in East Java…
Oigal – nah, I was just looking for Ross through the lense of google; wondered where he’d gone. I suppose it was a fairly obvious place for him to have turned up… 😉
Still a pity David had to take such measures. It was a fun read every once in a while.
Not for a moment I believed he was sabotaged. The left-wing hacker surely would have left a message. This is typical for the bizarre paranoia prominent on the right-wing fringe.
RRA is not exactly the equivalent of the Playstation network.
I thought a radical change for Timdog to move to the dark side so fast
timdog::
What is that horrific “Gates of Vienna” website anyways?
It’s back…Never guess where this from
Since we were sabotaged, last weekend, by a spiteful blog rival, we have managed to set up this new RRA and have been doing our best to resume normal service despite the cry-baby’s ephemeral triumph.
Why do I get the feeling it thinks (?) I had something to do with the disinfection of the web? 🙂
probably referring to me Oigal, but yawn, who cares, good luck to him…. One thing though as I know he’ll be reading this I did not delete his blog and he’s welcome to it if he wants it.
Pity IM lost Ross McKay from Ulster/Britain/Canada/Australia/Jaksa (pick one), a companion championing the rights of minorities against the ever-growing conservative tendencies both in Indonesian politics and society. Indonesia needs liberalism, pluralism and multiculturalism to live up to Bhinneka Tunggal Ika and Ross understands this very well.
Again :-(…Still as long we have a fancy building to work from…
A PLANE with around 25 passengers and crew crashed into the sea today in eastern Indonesia, killing everyone onboard, a navy officer told local radio.
“I can confirm that all the passengers were killed when the plane exploded as it crashed into the sea,” a navy officer involved in the search told ElShinta radio.
“The aircraft was smashed to pieces … We found 15 bodies floating on the water and the other passengers are trapped inside the wreckage,” the officer added.
A transport ministry spokesman said earlier there were 27 people onboard the Merpati Nusantara Airlines MA-60 aircraft – 21 passengers and six crew.

Unsurprising, but still. A fairly damning indictment of everyone else…
TD
I was wondering why no one else had picked up on that yet. There was an english version in the globe.
Sort of done it before – National Heroes: Gus Dur vs Soeharto
Also this old thing from Achmad is good on how ordinary poor folks probably view Suharto very positively – Suharto & the People
timdog,
Indeed shocking. My family and relatives have been largely anti-Soeharto but looking at current conditions it wasn’t that bad….
At least some positive news from the FIFA:
Just back from Bali, by default (long story) ended up in Kuta. Really doesn’t get any better does it. Almost a perfect example of what not to do if you manage tourism.
Place to avoid unless you really enjoy seeing the very worst of all cultures. Oh and you should be allowed to beat with heavy sticks after the 200th time hearing “mau cewek mister”
Oigal

Indeed. I could fill a book with all the crap that’s going on here. And it gets worse from day to day. I can’t fathom why tourists are still coming en masse. Some journalist from the NYT has called it “hell on earth”. A herd mentality characterized by greed, stampeding overpopulation, noise, pollution and shortsighted overdevelopment are destroying what once was a wonderful place with a unique culture, a source of inspiration for artists and writers.
I’m moving out.
They even ask when you’re obviously already with someone, and you’ve got kids in tow, so it’s probably your wife – ‘do you want two/another one [cewek]?’

Yeah, didn’t want to into that one too much, but backed up a couple of times for respond to some rather nasty comments…still the term “Asuh” tends to let people know where you stand (A word of warning, count the odds and be prepared to back it up as its a pretty serious insult…Not to be used lightly unless you really know what you are doing).
I should also make clear, its not a mono culture thing. Pretty much the dregs of all involved. In fact, at the other extreme I had to admire the tolerance of the security guards etc, the crap they have to put up with.
On the amusing side..Cewek Mister x 100…Answer No, tidak mau, ngak mau, etc etc..followed by…Boy then? mister…Aaargh! (And for interest ..still no) but persistent little pests
the thing that makes me laugh the hardest in kuta is those obvious cops (moustache, leather jacket) that ask you if you wanna buy weed, they’ll even show you a bag, i always call ’em cop in their face and walk away laughing….idiots…..
haven’t been there in a while, not planning to either i much more prefer the beach in pangandaran…..
transport? cewek? transport? xtc? transport? transport? girl? boy? transport? mawijuaanah? transport? taxi? transport?
another thing that really makes me laugh is that “hoi mait!” or however you spell hey mate in a balinese accent….
i’ve got an old friend up in lovina beach, she opened up a school there, is doing quiet well, her stories are wonderful too, mostly about bule’s wanting to build houses there and then loosing all they’ve got, cheating me???? NO WAY!!! i know wawan three weeks now he would NEVER cheat me!!!
reading two books at the same time at the moment, one lovely book about suharto by an old journalist, keith loveard, lots of interesting stuff about how the crisis in the 90’s came about, about kejawen and another book, just started, a house in bali by colin mcphee, quiet different from how bali is these days:)
