Whether Valentine’s Day is a Jewish conspiracy.
West Sumatra
Buya Mas’oed Abidin, the chairman of the West Sumatra branch of the Indonesian Clerics’ Council (Majelis Ulama Indonesia, MUI) complained on 12th February that the celebration of Valentine’s Day was proof that Indonesia was more and more subject to foreign, global culture.
We have to stop it, it’s not appropriate in our culture.
The celebration of lover’s day was proof that the youth of today had lost their love for Indonesia and its culture, he said.
In the original Republika report there is also mention that Valentine’s Day, celebrated on 14th February by young people worldwide, is a capitalist-Jewish conspiracy, although it is not entirely clear whether this is an editorial statement, or Buya Mas’oed Abidin’s opinion, probably the latter.
Buya Mas’oed Abidin is then quoted:
Parents, teachers, and Islamic organisations have to urge young people not to celebrate Valentine’s Day.
The effort to stop the celebration was very important because of all the natural disasters that Indonesia had suffered recently, like floods, tsunamis and earthquakes, he said. Rises in the prices of basic goods were also connected, he seemed to suggest.
As a solution he recommended that the national government establish Hari Sumpah Pemuda (Youth Pledge Day, 28th October) as a day of young love, to replace Valentine’s Day, considering that the original oath swearers of 1928 had much love for their country. republika
Meanwhile in the West Sumatra town of Bukittinggi the mayor, Ismet Amzis, said on 13th February that celebrating Valentine’s was illegal, based on a pre-existing local anti-sin law (Peraturan Daerah tentang Pemberantasan Maksiat).
It’s not part of our culture, it’s very close to sin, people hug and kiss on Valentine’s Day, that is sinful.
One hundred public order officers will patrol the streets of Bukittinggi on Valentine’s Day looking for couples walking together. They will also raid hotels.
Hotels and restaurants are also forbidden from holding any special programs or offers for Valentine’s Day.
The city government has already instructed schools to direct their pupils to the mosque on 14th February, and has informed mosque preachers to prepare special sermons for teenagers.
The mayor also said that in future New Year’s Eve celebrations would also be banned, because they encouraged people to commit sin. Bukittinggi was known as a tourist destination, but: tempo
It’s better to not have tourists than have sinful things going on.
North Sumatra
Buya Mas’oed Abidin’s counterpart in North Sumatra, Abdullah Syah, said on 13th February that the MUI had ruled that celebrating Valentine’s Day was haram or “taboo” for Muslims in the province.
It’s against the principles of Islam.
He also said it was a product of foreign culture, and was strictly forbidden. republika
He did not forbid anyone; he has no power to do so. He is not a mullah or a pope. He’s just campaigning against it. The West Sumatrans too will make individual decision whether they agree with him or not. Indonesians, contrary to what people thought, can also think for themselves.
And from the flying Valentine’s Day cards and TV shows dedicated to it yesterday, you know where people stand in this matter.
Dear Cuk,
But for every one person who might say “gee, now that I think of this as a Jewish Conspiracy, I can’t celebrate Valentine’s Day,” there will be four who read this and say “this just proves what I already thought about Islam.” I don’t think this fool is representative of Muslims as a whole in any which way, but his stupidity is basically ammunition for those that want to defame and ridicule present-day Islam. To me, that’s pretty bad marketing

Dear Pak Odin,
Dear Pak Odin,
Your nick name remind me to a familiar name of my high temper friend from Madura Island, now let us back to the topics, the outsider might think that is the bad marketing strategy but we are doing that for purpose of the screening process. How does it work? Every dumb infidels when they see and look on any stupid comment and a stupid action by the Muslim followers would directly associated those dumbness with the Islamic tenets and they will conclude that the Islamic teaching is bad and they will not interest in Islam any more and bingo for us, however the smart infidels would act otherwise they would investigate to the source of Islam and the facts spoke itself that after 9/11 terrorist attack Islam has been even growing faster anywhere even in US.
Regards,
Polite Provokator

Sorry Murphy, look like you were reading somehting different to the rest of the world.
Dear Cuk,
The people of Madura are misunderstood…they aren’t stealing, they just want some fruit to eat! Where they come from, you eat what you find because you can’t find much. They remind me of my viking ancestors, only with more carok and fewer axes π
My point is, good marketing would be to explain why this fellow believes Valentine’s Day is un-Islamic, but pointing to what’s logically un-Islamic, such as the commercialism or it’s Christian/Pagan roots, without dumbing it down with the “Jews” comment. By doing so he dumbs down his own personal faith. As such, he insults Islam, which is a sin. π
Best,
Logicman
Anita: Please don’t give that idea, International football match will be disaster here, it’s like allowing destruction idea to the mass.
Murphy:
“Everyone is free to express his opinion and to campaign for it. Everyone else is also free to listen or not listen to him”
I was not arguing against his right to voice his opinion. I was arguing against his opinion.
I think religious leaders have some authority in any country, and as regards any religion. Of course Buya Mas’oed Abidin does not have formal authority, but his word legitimates the regulation of people’s behaviour such as that taking place in Bukit Tinggi as noted in the post.
“Whether buying chocolate on Valentine’s Day is good or bad, everyone is entitled to their opinion; they will call each other “ridiculous”; and that, Trane, is normal.”
You are right, and it is pretty much what I said.
My point was that Buya Mas’oed Abidin does not want to leave it at calling people ‘ridiculous’.. He urges parents, teachers and religious leaders to keep youngsters from celebrating Valentine’s Day. He thinks their behaviour will have terrible consequences not only for themselves, but for others. I think he is wrong to an extent that in my estimate is ill will.
Best regards,
Trane
P.S. I am sorry if the last paragraph in my comment above could be read as if addressed to you specifically, Murphy. It referred to a general ‘you’. Anyway: Best wishes to you.
Can’t these people exercise their belief in God without insulting or negatively commenting about others?
It’s just amazing to me that to issue a good fatwa you need to talk bad about other people.
No I have no plans to send chocolates to anyone.
But it’s a pity that these people can’t celebrate V Day there. Here in my junior college (JC)in Singapore we celebrate it openly. We exchange gifts in the form of chocolates or just a little star with a note written in it. We even have inter-JC flower delivery competition among all JCs in Singapore.
And guess what, the flower delivery thing is not just a matter of boys sending roses to their girlfriends or vice versa. The competition does not just celebrate Valentine’s Day; it also celebrates Friendship Day there. So people send flowers as a form of appreciation for friends. And needless to say, students from every creed and every race partake in this activity.
So if anyone finds the word “Valentine” offensive or too religious in nature, why not call it Friendship Day instead?
Let it be that on Friendship Day, we let go of all religious / racial differences for a day and just write a note to someone, perhaps a friend or colleague, to tell him/her that we treasure him/her. Surely that isn’t too hard…
Happy Valentine’s/ Friendship Day to all.
Off Topic, but this reminded me of something funny I saw on Legian Beach the other day after Galungan. All the Balinese had been to the beach to pray and make offerings. As a result the beach was full of offerings consisting of many kinds of fruit, candies and cakes etc”Β¦ so mid morning there are contingents of Javanese with huge tarpaulins hauling down the beach picking up all the fruit etc from the offerings. They had tons of it. I just hope they dont’ take it to market and re-sell it to the balinese for their next offerings!
Most of the beachcombers/aggressive nail clippers/sunglass salesmen are orang Madura. Balinese often call all Muslim migrants “orang Jawa,” regardless of their actual ethnic origins. I’m not into cultural generalizations (despite my jokes in the other thread), but there’s definately a cultural/economic emphasis on successful scavenging among them. Has to do with the arid climate of Madura…you eat what you find. Many of the Madura I spoke to in Kalimantan Barat said it was a place where “you can find enough food for the day.” So if there’s some fruit no one is eating, go for it. It’s wasted otherwise.
In a lot of places, like Kalbar and Bali, this gets interpreted as thieving.
“people hug and kiss on Valentine’s Day, that is sinful.”
Oh heavens NO! not hugging and kissing…anything but that!

Yes, I would hate for my wife to smile…..What an evil thing to do.
If she is too happy and romantic, god will have to kill half of Java with earthquakes to teach us a lesson.
Why does love make your god so mad?
Jews owned most chocolate factories and that is why they promote Valentine days. With profit made from these sales, they wired it back to Israel to kill Allah’s slaves.

I can agree that some of these people wire back money to Israel to fight… But saying that they own most chocolate factories… Isn’t that a bit of an overstatement? Bring some examples please. If that really happens, I’ll consider giving you chocolates on Facebook. If you use them.
Happy Friendship Day to you.
I can’t give you any links or newspaper clippings because Jews also happen to own and control most mass medias. We, muslims know for a fact that we are victims of satanic Jews.

No thanks, I do not want to be part of ‘Jewish Conspiracy’.

Right, and the moon is made out of cheese, and btw, neil armstrong heard the call to prayer on the moon, and the books written beforehand have all been corrupted…
lame man, lame
I guess this is why the term “globalization” was coined! Rapidly developing technology and ease of communication means that cultural influences other than our own can permeate the whole world — some good, some bad but that’s the way it goes.
The only way to stop it is to prevent people from communicating with each other, prevent travel to different local regions and foreign locales, and to generally restrict the basic rights of citizens — if this were to happen then we might have a real conspiracy on our hands!
But that said it is a creative approach to whip out an old law or create new laws that label certain cultural traditions like Valentine’s Day a sin and then let the very heavy hand of the law deal with it! It is not the right approach but you do what you do!
Jewish conspiracies and Jews ruling the world through the domination of the mass media and the monopolization of capital and any other theory out there all stem from that same source that the Jews are responsible for the death of Christ and are to be punished for it. Let’s not forget that the crucifiction of Christ was a political power play and that Christ was a Jew and the distinction between Christianity and Judaism may have really been a result of seeking out political advantge in tumultuous times…a reading of the Gospels will enlighten the reader to where the blame game originated.
Yet, when it is all said and done this absolute domination of world affairs has not allowed the Jews to remove the nonsense being spouted by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad about wiping Israel of the face of the map from public discourse — so much for world media domination! To be brutally honest I do not see the extermination of the Jews bringing about any positive changes in my life, it has been tried before although Ahmadinejad would have us believe that the Holocaust is a fiction and that it never occurred. But obviously listening to the man it is something that he desires to see happen now — a world leader advocating the extermination of a group of people from the earth — it is time we as a global community woke up and smelled the coffee, we have a serious problem here.
The extermination of groups of people removes from the very fabric of our communities those things that make us what we are. There is no glory or honor in genocide and the Holocaust is a history lesson that as human beings we must not be allowed to forget. even more importantly it is something we must not allow ourselves to repeat!
Killing people for their religious beliefs is just plain morally wrong and I do not think my moral compass is broken on this point!
However, I do see my life taking a significant turn for the worst if Ahmadinejad was to rule my world — definitely no heaven there!
It reminds me of an oft used argument from the Indonesian context where every time there was rumblings and undercurrents of dissatisfaction with the economy the Soeharto Government trotted out the race card that it was Indonesian Chinese almost total domination of the local markets that was the root cause of all this economic evil — rubbish!
But the real question here is that if I give my wife a box of chocolates and flowers on any other day besides 14 February have I committed a sin in Bukittinggi or some other part of Sumatra?
I would have thought there are more pressing issues in those parts of Indonesia than the sinful nature of globalization and additions to Indonesia’s cultural traditions. A little bit more love and tolerance in the world from all sides would serve us much better than some of the vitriol being espoused here. The issue here is the value of foreign cultural traditions and the manner they are incorporated into local cultural traditions and not one of the big Zionist conspiracy to rule the world — the Jewish conspiracy is an alternate reality that just does not stand up to scrutiny.
Whatever happened to that base Indonesian ideological concept of unity in diversity?
I do not expect to convert any diehards to my cause of tolerance but as Mohandas “Mahatma” Gandhi said “You must be the change you want to see in the world”!
So, on that note thanks for reading this far π

Well said.
Assalamualaikum brother Goobers,
I feel so sorry that your life is so miserable because you carry such a very heavy burden of “HATRED”.
You mean the fastest growing religion in the world carries ‘hatred’? I bet you don’t know a thing about Islam. Christian is named after their founder Jesus Christ, Buddhist is from Buddha followers, our one true God is called Allah Subhana Wa Ta’ala; we call ourselves Muslim, NOT Allahist
where is your allah? Why he doesn’t protect you form the Jew? Does your allah has power?
If Allah swt willed, he could turn all the Jews into apes or swines just by uttering ‘kun’. But Allah swt loved His slaves so much that He wanted us to be strong. He wanted us to have a chance to earn our eternal rewards by testing us in this mortal life.
Make no mistake, the earthquakes and hurricanes in America, the drought and sudden flash floods in Australia; these were brought on by Allah swt to show Bules their ‘El Nino’ theory is bulls**t.
Perhaps these pictures will enlighten you:
Miracles of Islam
If you see this miracles, you will convert to Islam for sure. If you have doubt, explain to me how and why it happens.

For your info, Mahatma Gandhi, speaking on the character of Muhammad, (pbuh) says in (Young India):
“I wanted to know the best of one who holds today’s undisputed sway over the hearts of millions of mankind….I became more than convinced that it was not the sword that won a place for Islam in those days in the scheme of life. It was the rigid simplicity, the utter self-effacement of the Prophet, the scrupulous regard for his pledges, his intense devotion to this friends and followers, his intrepidity, his fearlessness, his absolute trust in God and in his own mission. These and not the sword carried everything before them and surmounted every obstacle. When I closed the 2nd volume (of the Prophet’s biography), I was sorry there was not more for me to read of the great life.”
Wasalam.

I admire your zealousness. I have an information that might help your quests.
Intel Processors since “Banias” series were the research results of israeli’s research centre. Therefore using Pentiums for your computers might be haram, some money you use to buy a computer will definitely go to israelis and jews to further support their cause.
Using other processors might not help either, since the nature of patents overlaps in processor design world.
So, i suggest you should turn off your computer, and destroy it immediately, since its the result of satanic jews conspiracy… and maybe you should destroy every computer you encounter also.
When we stop hearing from you, we will know that you have proven your piety, we will respect you for that.
…and SOMEBODY PLEASE, tell MUI to ban computers too!!! π

Firstly, with due respect, how can anyone be serious with pseudonym that rhyme like lullaby.
Secondly, without the help of Islamic algebra, the world will be without mathematics, let alone build Processors.
Thirdly, Allah swt let the Jews ‘invent’ processors for a reason – To show us that He is equal to all his creatures eventhough they seeks to ignore Him.
Lastly, I know what you are trying to get at. Good try, but Allah swt gave me a superior brain. Go to this video link and see if you can offer any explanation:
Aluang,
Your views seem a bit blasphemous to me, but I should probably let my Muslim friends be the judges of that.
You simply use your own religion not as that beacon of light, inspiration and solidarity which it is for the huge majority of Muslims. You use it instead as a club to beat other people whom you do not know, and with regard to whom you just happen to carry strong but groundless resentment.
You may dislike the policies of Israel, and I might in some cases agree with you. But you do not stick to criticising policies or actions of particular people. Instead you turn your wrath against all Jews.
In that way, you are no better than those morons who see a ‘clear link’ between Islam and terrorism. You just change the wording to ‘Judaism and terrorism’ instead.
I bid you a good day,
trane

Again, i agree with you wholeheartedly.
But it doesnt mean that you are allowed by Him/Her to buy their products, clearly some of your money will definitely be a huge help for their “evil plans”, dont you think so? just like those chocolates!

Just for the sake of consistency, either stop using computers, or start chewing chocolates! theyre all from jews!! π

you mean, if i show you cross shapes exist in universe, i should ask you to explain? or maybe even ask you to have faith to the cross?
Or what about peace sign? i saw lots of tree branches showing peace symbol overwhelmingly outnumbered crosses.
or circular symbol of daoism? that seems to outnumber everything else in the universe, should one converts to daoism because of this?
and for heavenssakes, what does that have to do with the price of tea in china?
@ trane
Your views seem a bit blasphemous to me, but I should probably let my Muslim friends be the judges of that.
“O ye who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians for your friends and protectors; they are but friends and protectors to each other. And he amongst you that turns to them (for friendship) is of them. Verily Allah guideth not a people unjust. (The Noble Quran, 5:51)”
It is in the quran, brother. Your so-called Muslim friends, eh?
You simply use your own religion not as that beacon of light, inspiration and solidarity which it is for the huge majority of Muslims. You use it instead as a club to beat other people whom you do not know, and with regard to whom you just happen to carry strong but groundless resentment.
You would be lucky to get beaten by clubs. Probably you still think all Muslims still ride on camels. Sorry brothers, we use bombs and we drive cars.
You may dislike the policies of Israel, and I might in some cases agree with you. But you do not stick to criticising policies or actions of particular people. Instead you turn your wrath against all Jews.
Refer to Q5:51 above. The same God who created you and I condemns Jews and Christians.
In that way, you are no better than those morons who see a ‘clear link’ between Islam and terrorism. You just change the wording to ‘Judaism and terrorism’ instead.
Sorry, I use ‘Jews and Christians’ as clearly stated in the holy quran, NOT ‘Judaism and terrorism’.

yeah….. right, no one would have figured out anything if it wasn’t for the arabs. Pythagoras and his mates were just piggy backing on that wave of intellect.
And by the way, formulating the concept of zero and some other mathematical problems is a long way from creating a processor….. wonder why they didn’t do anything with that knowledge?

Not sure what you’re getting at, broder. π
Norwegians make individual decisions to celebrate or not celebrate Valentine’s. So should Indonesians. If someone thinks it’s a violation of their Islamic beliefs, fine. If someone doesn’t, fine. The point isn’t whether this guy criticizes Valentine’s Day, it’s that he forbids others to celebrate it as they see fit and then blames it on “Jews.” Anyone that stupid should not be in a position to tell others what to do…
