On 10th April in Sampang, Madura island, East Java, the home of a Shiite cleric was attacked by a mob of more than 100 people. The attackers carried sharp weapons and attempted to enter the cleric’s home but were prevented from doing so by police. No-one was hurt. metrotv
Still in East Java, but on the mainland, on 20th April thousands of people in the town of Bangil, near Pasuruan, marched to the office of the Attorney General’s department demanding the banning of organisations which promote Shia Islam in Indonesia.
The protestors, marching under the banner of a group called “Pemuda Ahlussunah Bangil”, or Bangil Sunnah Followers Youth, had previously gathered in the town square after Friday prayers, and then went about the town putting up banners condemning Shia Islam. On their passage through the town the marchers menacingly passed by the offices and homes of organisations and people thought to be most responsible for spreading Shia Islam in the Bangil area.
The leader of the protestors, Habib Umas Assegaf, said Shia Islam was heretical and responsible for such outrageous teachings and practises as contractual marriage. He said if Shia organisations were not banned he would bring even more people out onto the streets in future.
Asis Widarto of the Attorney General’s office in Bangil met with representatives of the mob and said his department would take into consideration the concerns of the protestors. He asked the Pemuda Ahlussunah Bangil to provide the Attorney General with evidence that Shia Islam was indeed heretical and thereafter such material would be studied by the comically named “Tim Pakem” (Pengawas Aliran Kepercayaan Masyarakat, Overseers of the Peoples’ Beliefs), this august body being composed of policemen, state lawyers, and members of the National Unity Board (Badan Kesatuan Bangsa (Bakesbang)). antara
Hasyim Muzadi of the Nahdlatul Ulama travelled to Bangil on 22nd April to attempt to calm the situation. He met with dozens of senior clerics in the town and attempted to explain the history of various Islamic sects, starting with Khawariji Islam, and moving onto the Shia.
Hasyim asked NU people in Bangil and Pasuruan to be rational, the differences between Sunni and Shia could not be solved by fighting. What was worse the NU was currently seeking to solve the Sunni vs Shia conflict in Iraq and the actions of NU members in Bangil were not helping. jawapos
The leader of the NU’s youth group in Bangil, GP Ansor, Mr Fahrur Rozi, also spoke out on the matter. He hoped that Ansor members were not involved in the anti-Shia demonstrations. “Gus” Fahrur said the PAKEM (Pengawasan Aliran Kepercayaan Masyarakat) was authorised to decide whether a certain belief was heretical or not.
Meanwhile Zainal Suwari, the local head of Banser, another NU youth group, said none of his members were involved in the demo. jawapos
On a later occasion, on 29th April, Hasyim Muzadi advised Shiite Muslims in Indonesia not to say bad things about any of the prophet Muhammad’s companions, like Abu Bakar, Umar bin Khatab and Usman, nor any of the early sheikhs, like Sheikh Abdul Qadir Djaelani, Imam Bukhori and Imam Muslim. If they did it would upset the feelings of NU members, he said.
He also said that efforts to divide Sunni and Shia Muslims in Indonesia were part of a wider international plot to weaken Islam, as was to be seen in Iraq and Palestine. tempo

Hate to break it to you, but it’s impossible without using another holy book as the “proof.” Since he probably thinks your Quran is as misleading as you think his Bible is, I doubt that will change his mind.
So if you decide to quote Quranic verses to him, keep in mind that he’ll respond by quoting Gospel back at you to the same effect.
This is why religion is a matter of faith 🙂

@Maryam…why don’t you just accept that he feels the way he does, but ask him if he can prove Jesus is God without making reference to the Bible? Since this is impossible, you can retort by saying:
“You have your way, and I have mine. I can respect your faith in your beliefs as long as you respect mine.”

I have debated many mualaf-ed Bule (whitey converts) and have exposed their deviant carnal desire. What attracted whiteys to islam is halalled sex with underage children, nothing else. Ask Dawud Farquhar and Barry Prima.
I am ready to debate a Christian about his/her faith. One thing I would like to know beforehand is your friend’s ethnicity. Also, make sure your friend is someone of importance, preferably in the hierarchy of a cardinal or bishop. I gain nothing by winning a debate from a ‘nobody’.
Your friend can fire the first round in the debates, or alternatively he can choose from one of the following topics:
1) Virgin birth.
2) Christians worship Judas Iscariot.
3) The Trinity.
4) Jesus was a moslem.
5) Jesus was a prophet.Sister Maryam, you may also join in the debate by defending Prophet Mohammad pbuh. With spiritual guidance from the Javanese Walis and my knowledge of the kejawen philosophy, I am ever ready. Bring it on. I am ready to kill two birds with a single stone.

by the way I forgot to ask you if you are sunni or shia. I am myself shia from iran and my christian freind is from india living in U.S.A. you know we fighted badly on a religous discussion. We are not takhibg now. If you are ready to prove shia and that jesusu isnt god, I will think of a way to connect you with him. He isnt from a special group I think. you decide if you can help me with this. -

If you seriously value your friendship with this fellow, you should drop this and just accept him for who he is and what he believes, while asking him to do the same for you. It’s pretty lame if the way in which you choose to follow God stops you from being able to enjoy each other’s company and value as individual human beings.

but it isnt only a freindship we love eachother. we wanted to marry if we could prove 1 religion to the other. but if we cant do that (and Ii wasnt able to convince him and debate) we should leave eachother 🙁 so we are both very sad now -

I’m sorry to hear that. But shall I go ahead and assume that you want him to convert and, if he does not, do not feel you can marry him? If that’s the case, then the best way you can change his mind would be not to tell him his religion is wrong, but that his current beliefs can fit with yours. You could tell him that Islam also sees Jesus as a prophet and views the lessons of the Old and New Testaments as emanating from God…just that the Quran is too, and is seen as above them. You could show him how the underlying values of Christianity and Islam are very similar…obiesance to God, charity, etc.
But I think any attempt to convince someone that one religion is more rational or correct than another is doomed to fail, as it’s impossible to prove without referring to your own holy books.

Sorry but just want to add…you are both in the US, no? If so, then you don’t have to convert or have him convert in order to legally get married, though perhaps for personal, family or religious reasons you feel that you do…

I live in iran but this isnt our problem. Im myself religous and I dont marry a christian man for it is haraam for us. he had no prolem with this marriage but I cant do that 🙁 -
Right…then my original suggestion holds: try to convince him that his Christian beliefs are compatible with Islamic ones. You need to make him feel comfortable and not feel as if he is betraying his traditions…and instead just adding new ones!
If this does not work, and you are not willing to be in a mixed marriage, then you will not be able to proceed, unfortunately. But at least you will have tried…

As soon as a little girl reach puberty, Allah swt made it halal for them to have sex. The same goes with baby boys. Baby boys are born with erection, sometimes you see their little thingy erected while they were sleeping. They are ready for sexual activity too. I am sure you agree with me on this.
